TL:DR is that in 1638 the Swedes decided to get in on the colonization game and established New Sweden near present day Wilmington, Delaware. Some Forest Finns also came along for the ride. However, the Dutch said, “No way, Thor-boys!” and took over the colony renaming it New Netherlands.
Two take-aways from this bit of history is that the icon of the American frontier – the log cabin – was likely brought to us by the Forest Finns, and 17th century Europeans of every flavor were remarkably unimaginative in naming places in the New World.
Bonus fact: President Biden is from Wilmington, Delaware. Perhaps he can be considered a New Swede?
