Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the use of telephones by schoolchildren. Now schoolchildren will be required to hand over their mobile phones before classes. Students will only be allowed to use them in emergency situations.

  7. This is like this in Turkey since I started primary school and phones became commonplace. It is way better than what the US people do. Students should not have electronics during classes.

  11. Russian here. It’s a double-edged law.

    On the good side, it’s good for education, removing distractions, cheating and so on.

    On the bad side, if a teacher starts doing something bad in class (propaganda lessons, harassment, etc), the kids won’t be able to record it and complain later or cause a media outrage.

  12. Schools should not have the power to hold pupils property BEFORE the have used it in a manner that distracts class. Responsible phone users get fucked over this.

    The kids won’t be less bored, uninterested, distracted without the phones. Kids were bored, uninterested, distracted etc. before the cellphones too.

  18. We allready do this in some schools in Sweden. In my kids school al students up to grade 7 have to leave their phones in a box at the start of the day and wont get it back until the end of the day. Phones must also me left in silent mode, if parrents need to contact the kids there is the class phone we can call.

    Really good move so that the kids can focus on their studies and should also be done in the higher grades, not just up to 7.

  20. I dont know how is it in rest of Europe, but here in Czechia, phones aren’t allowed during class, unless the teacher specifies we can use them. Though most teachers don’t mind some students using a phoen, because for example, im really good at English so my English teacher just let’s me be on my phone all day.
    Though if it’s a student with bad grades, he does say to not use the phone.

    So while it is a part of the school rules, that you can’t use a phone, ita not really followed by anyone.

  26. I have worked as a school teacher and this should be done everywhere, honestly. It’s impossible to teach students that constantly have that temptation of checking their phones.

  27. I am a Russian schoolboy, and we have a lot of different laws related to schools, but they are almost never implemented. My friends and I use our phones every day in class, and no one punishes us, no one takes away our phones. Moreover, we don’t have enough textbooks, which is why we HAVE to use Internet copies of assignments. Therefore, I am sure that this law will not affect anything

  32. It’s funny because in the Netherlands we just signed the same law.

    However I do feel it was needed in the Netherlands, but somehow I fear about what Russia will do with such a law…
