Good. Old growth is used to give rich people nice wood beams and furniture. Its too expensive for other people.
Someone has to protect the lungs of the planet. you know trump doesn’t give a fuck. He’d probably love to clearcut all the public parks.
Thank you Joe!
good
That’s awesome America! Do more of this
Contrast this with the Trump Admin. EPA rescinding a ban against a pesticide that kills honey bees.
I love to see it. Save the trees!
“Plans”. Make it official now, please.
At least for the big old growth, right now at least in WA, nobody can process it. It requires specialized very expensive equipment that can handle the enormous size and weights. All the big mills long closed, now they want smaller timber that can be processed by computerized chip/n/saw mills, minimal crews, they cut 2x4s out of logs as small as 5″ diameter. Before they got away with exporting a lot of the big logs to Asia, but that was closed off by the feds, like B.C. has done for years, a domestic processing law for federally sourced timber.
Right now the companies mowed down their holdings of large second growth (2-5 ft. diameter) as fast as they could and converted to mechanized harvest and milling of 30 y.o. stands, like they do in the south. You can see it in the log truck loads of 100-200 pieces. I can remember seeing the occasional 2nd growth Sitka Spruce (a fast growing species) of 5-6 foot diameter shipped out of state to Tillamook Oregon, the only mill that could process it.
A lot of our timber on the Olympic Peninsula was state owned, not subject to export restrictions, that was mowed down just as fast. It was mostly Red Cedar, huge stands, not present in such pure stands anywhere else. I was a logger for 50 years and it made me sick watching this, it was obvious what was going on, sustained yield out the door for a quick profit . I worked mostly on tribal lands, very good stewards of the environment and preservation, logging a lot of their 2nd growth to buy back plots of tribal land they’d been swindled out of decades before and enlarge their land base to benefit all tribal members and indeed non tribal people, they are now the largest employer by far in my county.
I’d like to note that this isn’t a blanket ban on logging. We have a lot of forests that are routinely harvested in a multi-year cycle. Forests that are on lands that were completely cleared relatively recently and were replanted. They are an important part of the ecosystem because some plants and animals prefer living in younger forests. They are also an important part of the economy because the US is one of the world’s leading timber producers.
But, none of that is affected by this because these forests are not old-growth. Old-growth forests are forests that have *never* been cleared in living memory. They are home to well-established trees that are hundreds if not thousands of years old. Old-growth forests cannot be replaced when they are cleared. The growing process for them to turn into proper old-growth forests simply takes far too long. This ban on clearing them will be only a minor hindrance to the logging industry, but will make a major difference in preserving a unique aspect of our natural heritage.
>Because it comes under an executive order, its existence depends on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, making advocates worried about the protections’ vulnerability to the country’s political climate.
Boy, they sure do love finding ways to try to hold our vote hostage, huh? WHy wasnt this done form the beginning, like the article stated was requested by everyone in 2022? Why is this only being proposed now, when Biden’s numbers are down, and only for after the election before it takes effect, meaning it could still be cancelled on the other side? Why the delay? Its an executive order. **Put the protections in place NOW. Don’t give them two years to prioritize stripping out all the oldest and largest trees you ignorant Corporations First™ politician…**
Biden cant get anything right when he needs to, and is trying to hook us for our vote. Its getting ridiculous.

Lmao at the people acting like this is some major election carrot
There are procedures. Be happy it’s on the table, and not being turned into a table. This is a good thing.
Nobody is changing their vote on this. It’s not a carrot done for the election, as much as you want to cry that he’s “not doing enough” or “soon enough”
Bro, just do it now. Why wait?
In Oregon this is gonna make the scary white people freak out. Logging is overtly political these days as the practices are blatantly outdated and damaging to the environment. There are many towns that rely on logging. Sad thing is almost all of Oregon’s forest land is logging land. So it’s just a bunch of freaking tree farms and clear cuts. But it does support alot of families
Maybe he should do this before the election?
Protected until the moment another D-bag President comes along and just undoes it all without consulting anyone.
Conservatives: but the rich need these old trees to make money!!
Why not do it now? I hope he’s re-elected, but there’s still a chance the tangerine tyrant will be elected.
This is actually a really dumb idea. Logging is necessary for creating firebreaks which prevent controllable forest fires from becoming massive ones that release billions of tones of CO2. The Beechie Creek Fire destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of old growth forest and claimed dozens of lives. It could have been prevented with sustainable logging practices.
Is it not possible to do it sooner? A lot of logging can happen in a whole year.
Will not only be undone, but encouraged if he loses.
Can’t wait for the Fox segment where they tell their mentally challenged viewer that he hates trees.
No, please do it right the fuck now.
Yes please! I live in WA and it makes me so sad when these beautiful forests get clear cut. THere’s just no need for it.
It’s either going to be logged or it’s going to burn. You can only have so much fuel on the forest floor before the forest does what nature intended. So we can either manage our forests via logging or nature will manage it for us.
Hmm fascism or a guy who actually is doing good things for the environment?
Average American voter: I really don’t see the difference here, guess I’ll stay home
