  1. Just demonstrates the kick in the teeth those on 40-50k get.

  2. To be fair – that £40k to £50k weird bit is the part that should be shouted at – not the bit over £75k

  3. Differences in marginal tax rates between Scotland and the rest of the UK (2024-25)

But of course does not include the council tax difference which (can be) vast.

lol at downvotes for stating a fact, nothing else…

  4. The lesson is clear ; forget about working hard and trying to improve your circumstances for yourself and you family if you live in Scotland. The SNP government needs your money for campervans.

  5. What’s the story behind that weird little 40-50k bump?

  6. It’s actually a really interesting article. I didn’t appreciate how well Scotland is doing – and income is above expectations.

Focus on justice is interesting as well. Wonder what that is targeted at?

  7. While this paints an unpleasant picture, the truly awful bit is that this is defended by saying the majority of workers in Scotland pay less tax than they would in rUK. This means that we are becoming a low wage economy.

  8. I don’t really understand the rationale behind today’s tax increases – put together, they will raise £83Mn after behavioural changes. The council tax freeze is going to cost £140Mn — it doesn’t even cover that.

59% of the yield of the advanced tax rate will be lost due to behavioural changes, and 90% of the yield of the increase to the top rate will be lost due to behavioural changes.

It would make sense to me if the revenue raised was somewhat significant, but £83Mn is just ~0.14% of Scotland’s total budget.

I, of course, do not want public service cuts , but does this increase really go towards preventing cuts?

  9. being a civilised nation where wealth is redistributed through services etc comes with a price. But if you place a flasher car or a skiing holiday higher than the absolute basics for the less well off and a good safety net then you are kind of evil and selfish. Ive known at least 7 people in the limited number of family, friends and neighbours I know who studied hard, had good jobs but were struck down in their 30s or 40s by health issues which killed their career and income. It could happen to any of us. There but for the grace of his go I. Be more humble. We all need each other and one day you could badly need that safety net.

  10. yes but move to england then you use universal non means tested perks of being in Scotland like no uni fees, free carers at home for granny, free Prescriptions, free eye tests, gree hospital parking. free school meals for most of primary school, free music lessons ar school. Free sanitary products. Considerably lower council tax. That little lot could be worth thousands to many families.

Plus if things go tits up (usually this is due to health) then you have a much less harsh and more generous safety net (no bedroom tax, no 2 child cap, free nursery care for kids etc).
