Valeriia and Oleksii met eight years ago. They met while studying in Kharkiv – Valeriia was mastering the confectionery craft, while Oleksii just completed his training as a gas and electric welder. She was 17, he was 20.
During the war, Oleksii served in the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade. At first, he was a gunner and later served in the reconnaissance unit. For his exemplary performance of military duties, he was awarded the “Steel Cross” medal. In October 2022 he was killed by enemy fire. Valeriia went to the morgue to identify him. She felt immense sorrow for Oleksii’s parents and did not want them to have to do it. She didn’t think about herself at that moment.
“I immediately recognized him. The bullet hit his head, sparing his face. It was my Oleksii. I dreamt of being his wife. It wasn’t meant to be. So, I decided to take his surname anyway”
Oleksii’s brothers-in-arms brought Valeriia his belongings, among them – a jacket and a shirt. She wears them at home and almost feels herself embraced by her beloved. And she often recalls his words: ‘We have to go fight, or else the rashists will reach my home. Who if not me?”

Unbelievable. At some point most Ukrainians will have a gaping hole in their lives and have lost a loved one. I hope you carry on and become happy again someday. I am sure your deceased fiancé wishes the same for you.
