Is this program actually recycling plastic or just collecting it for separate, “cleaner” burning? Mainly I’m curious how clean the plastic needs to be regarding oily residue and food particles.

The text in their website makes no mention of actual recycling:

realCYCLE Collaborative closed loops for plastic

Whether we like it or not, plastic packaging is going to be part of everyday life for a long time to come. However, the consumption of packaging in such vast quantities devours raw materials and energy – and leaves behind huge mountains of waste. realCYCLE wants to change all that: made possible by the Migros Pioneer Fund, the project seeks to understand and structure the entire value chain of plastic packaging as a closed loop.
Targeting the value-added chain

This kind of circular economy can only work properly if there is coordinated interaction between the various steps – from the packaging design and production to raw materials trading. To achieve this, realCYCLE brings all the players in the value-added chain together and provides them with the knowledge they need for a cyclical collaboration model.
Conserving resources, reducing mountains of waste

The team also initiates pilot projects that show how the recycling of plastic packaging could look in practice in a circular future. Hand in hand with industrial partners, realCYCLE is also defining quality standards for the processing of plastics.

Thanks to realCYCLE’s integrated approach, old packaging will become new packaging in the future. This conserves resources and reduces the mountains of waste.

  1. Side question: do posts with both photos and (sufficiently long) text still require the explanatory top level comment? Seems the rules are a bit redundant. Can’t post a quick short text post and can’t post a photo without repeating some of my text.
