  1. ‘Mr Sivanandan’s daughter is the best female player at the European rapid and blitz championship in Zagreb!’

    My parents, probably.

  2. been following the chess scene for a while now and bodhana is serious shit, i am not exaggerating when i say she could end up being the first to surpass carlsen

  3. I started playing about a week ago, learning through chess.com.

My rating just dropped to about 390. Rating of 400 means you’re basically doing everything wrong.

    Lmao

  4. My six year old girl is into chess! I’m sure she will appreciate this article 🙂 . What an amazing achievement for someone so young.

  5. 2300+ performance at 8 years old is astounding. I hope she continues to play and develop, clearly a very talented kid.

For non-chess people, if you only know the moves, you’re about 200-600. 800 is average for people who play somewhat regularly. 1200-1700 is the range of a typical chess club player. Anything above 1800 is nearly unattainable for 99% of players. Even breaking into the 2000’s is something that not only requires serious talent and dedication.

The rating system is essentially “a difference of 400 points means the higher rated player scores more than 90% against the lower”. Imagine somebody who could beat you at chess 90% of the time, then somebody who could beat them 90% of the time, and somebody who could beat them 90% of the time. You still are not even close to her performance level…

For this little girl to perform to that standard is something special.

  6. >This summer, she was invited to 10 Downing Street and played chess with Rishi Sunak, before the government announced it was to invest £1m in the game to increase the number of English grandmasters.

Can they leave no PR stone unturned!

  7. A great talent but people should not put pressure on her with forecasts. Young prodigies usually become good international players but it does not mean they are going to reach Carlsen standards. Take Liang; played to a similar standard at age 8 and won 2 world age titles. He is now age 20 and rated 2640, which puts him just outside the world top 100. He is very good but will not make the world top 10.

  8. Impressive, but I hope that genius intellect is not wasted on chess.

I think humanity wastes too much of its potential talents, especially on destructive and counter-productive social and international foreign policies (war, racism, corruption)..etc

Our progress has been slow because we did not direct our potential einstein level prodigy’s into the fields of scientific inventions and discoveries.

Humanity is too self destructive in nature (capitalism, pollution) instead of guiding the next, future generations and achieving what we could have been and aspired to.

    The noble human/society.

  9. It’s funny how nobody in this thread is complaining about “too many immigrants”, unlike every other thread in r/unitedkingdom. Is this what an immigrant / child of an immigrant has to do to be accepted in the UK? Be the best at something?

  10. Fantastic achievement.

Anyone who’s played a few games of chess and played against someone who is experienced knows there’s levels to the game and I couldn’t imagine how difficult it would be at the elite level.

  11. Congrats to her. We need more high level chess players in this country

  12. There is a brown person in the thumbnail! So where are all the people normally complaining about immigration?
