Northern mayors mock government’s post as funds go to London

  1. The government has redirected £235m of HS2 funding under the Network North logo to be used on improving roads in London. The transport secretary said on Twitter today that “every penny” of the money saved by cancelling HS2 would be used on the north and Midlands. It genuinely seems that the government has unilaterally declared London to be northern! It’s a literal piss take.

  2. Meanwhile potholes here in Liverpool are big enough to swallow an entire bike wheel in some places

  3. Why on earth does the government feel like severely curtailing the biggest bit of infrastructure we have started building in the 21st century to be nothing more than a shuttle to Birmingham and Rugeley is a good way to justify fixing the roads. I’m not against fixing roads, they need it, but they way they went about it is what annoys me. Your never going to level up the north without providing it with good rail links, like the full HS2 and NPR would have provided, both of which have been curtailed or may never even happen anyway

  4. I read a Twitter post when a former special adviser wondered whether this was deliberate sabotage by the civil servants in the DfT press office, because this image is such a gift to the Opposition. After some discussion the thread consensus was that Tory ministers might well have approved it because they have just given up caring at this point.

  5. I don’t suppose that they could buy as many votes with that money in the North compared to what they’ll get for allocating it to London.

  6. this is what you ask for when you oppose moving parliament to wigan.

  7. Im glad London is part of the North now, We get HS2 so the North has HS2 now, but we get road improvements and HS2 station while the Northern part of the North gets nothing. Cant lie you guys should have fought harder for HS2

  8. 200m of that will go straight in to Tory pockets, and 35m on some speed humps on one street.

  9. I can’t say I’m surprised. This seems to be how this country operates now. All the money taken out of infrastructure projects in the north goes into 90% into the pockets of the government’s mates, and about 10% to some bit of the south east that doesn’t need it

  10. Well that didn’t take very long did it? I wish I was surprised, but as someone who’s not been able to catch a bus into the nearest town from where I live for 11 years now, it’s blatantly obvious the Tories have never and will never give a shit about Northern transport, be it potholes or otherwise.
