Leroy Merlin is selling Autonomous plug-in photovoltaic systems also called Balcony Solar systems.

The guy at Leroy said I can just plug it in. I don’t want to go into a discussion of the price of the Leroy offer. I’m would like to know if it’s now legally allowed to plug them in ? How about EAC they will note on my meter that I am a producer ( even if little) and fine me?
Or is there an update on regulation ?
Thanks !

  1. Nice. Well, technically you’re not allowed to have any PV + Inverter installed on your property that is not approved by EAC (if you’re connected to the grid – net metering scheme) or by the Department Of Electrical and Mechanical Services in case you are building an autonomous system with a backup/fallback battery.

Many people on Reddit will argue that nobody will notice the system and fine you, but in reality no one really knows.

As I said in another thread, my sources are from the Ministry of Energy, after calling many people and enquiring about the matter a few months ago. Let me say that the matter is not 100% clear even to them.

Regulations are outdated and, in my opinion, purposely created to favor local installers and maintain EAC’s place in Cyprus. Just look at the regulations in other EU countries (Eg. Germany) on the matter and you’ll understand the reality of things in this country.

If you have a modern meter it will automatically record that you’re exporting to the grid. And since you haven’t gotten any authorization from EAC and no ripple control to prevent issues on the grid, you might get in trouble.

  2. The most important thing in a photovoltaic system is how good your inverter is. The system output at 12-24 volts and it needs to be made into 220-240 50Hz. In Cyprus AHK cares about her Hz because unstable Hz will fuck up appliances and cables. So if the inverter in this thing doesn’t have a stable 50Hz output they will know and come knock at your door.

  3. This is illegal. There are many regulations a PV system should follow. For example, avoidance of creating island, seperate fuse box wirh surge protection, proper grounding, and addional checks for avoiding injecting DC on the AC part.

Note that more advance plugin devices include a sensor to avoid pushing electricity to the EAC network to avoid any issues with the meter.
