Kalvin Phillips will seek guarantees over his playing time before choosing which club to leave Manchester City for in January.
That might put Juventus at a slight advantage over Newcastle United in the race to sign Phillips, with the two clubs currently at the front of the queue.
Phillips knows he must leave City, either on loan or permanently in the January transfer window, and believes he can still move to a top club – which Juve and Newcastle are rated as being.
Despite Newcastle’s injury crisis, Juventus’ need is rated as being bigger than the Premier League club’s because of the long-term absences of Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba.
Phillips is desperate to play in the Euros and is in line to form part of manager Gareth Southgate’s first-choice team, as long as he can play enough football before then.
Moving to Juventus for the second half of the season would be a bigger upheaval for Phillips in terms of his personal life, with Newcastle offering a relatively straightforward switch.

Newcastle are [without Sandro Tonali](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/10/18/sandro-tonali-betting-scandal-clean-massimo-cellino-brescia/), who, like Fagioli, is banned, but still have Bruno Guimares and Joelinton, who manager Eddie Howe said he hoped would not be out long with injury.
Phillips made an appearance off the substitutes’ bench [in City’s World Club Cup victory](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2023/12/19/urawa-red-diamonds-vs-man-city-live-score-club-world-cup/) over Urawa Reds, but has barely played this season.
That means he cannot afford to spend any time on the substitutes’ bench at a new club during the second half of the season, [with the European Championships ](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/0/euro-2024-germany-when-where-england-scotland-groups/)on the horizon.

Hope he goes to Juventus. Don’t fancy him going to Newcastle and suddenly becoming good under Howe, and I also like seeing English lads playing abroad
He’s such a great guy I feel sorry for him
If he wants playing time he needs to actually be a presence on the field and not just ghost until he makes a foul.
Each game he plays I honestly forget he’s even there until something goes against him.
