  1. Good. At least one country with some common sense when it comes to these things.

  2. > While Norway joins the ranks of progressive nations taking a stand against conversion therapy, similar bans, primarily for minors, exist in countries such as Albania, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, France, Germany, Iceland, Malta, New Zealand, and parts of Spain and the United States.

    > Conversion therapy is rooted in the false belief that homosexuality or being transgender is immoral, an illness, or a deviation. The methods employed can range from prayer and exorcism to counselling, psychotherapy, hypnosis, and even the use of electric shocks.

reminds me of But I’m a Cheerleader https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0179116/

  3. Such wonderful news.

I look forward to the day that the USA joins the civilized world by doing this.

  4. Just to head off the inevitable “Why can’t adults choose to do this on their own?” comments.

No “Conversion Therapy” has EVER shown repeatable results towards the ostensible goal. There’s quite a lot of evidence to suggest that the few people who claim it succeeded on them were pushed into doing it for social reasons (family or community ostracizing them for something out of their control) and then subsequently claimed it worked so they could integrate back in.

There’d be a solid discussion on if the consequences of these “therapies” (namely the emotional damage, self hatred, and frequently post traumatic stress issues) were worth it IF the so-called therapies worked, but they don’t. As such, it is only a responsible thing for a government to ban what at BEST is consensual bullying but what is more usually just simply psychological torture.

Your sexual preference and identity is a biologically influenced thing. You can’t just “convince yourself not to be gay”, so the more intense and supposedly successful versions of this work on operant conditioning. Present a situation where the gay person might get aroused and then immediately apply a negative stimulus which can be anything from negative words to outright electric shocks and beatings. Repeat until the person no longer displays visible signs of arousal at the “undesirable” stimulus. Except this isn’t how biology works. The person will STILL be aroused, but now you’ve harmed their ability to physically participate in sex AND you’ve harmed them psychologically because ANY arousal, regardless of source, is now associated with that particular flavor of torture.

TLDR: These “therapies” don’t work and are basically torture, and someone can be socially forced to do it when they themselves don’t want to. To protect them, these bans are absolutely necessary.

  5. Gay kids go to conversion therapy and come out even more gay after having been molested by a gay counselor.

  6. So conversion therapy is illegal but propaganda saying that gender is a social construct is okay? That’s swell.

  7. Man, I wish my grandparents had stayed in Norway so I wouldn’t be in the christofascist death spiral of democracy that is America these days. I likely wouldn’t exist, but that is a sacrifice I would be willing to make.

  8. Most of the top five quality of life countries have a socialistic bent. They are also super liberal. Plenty of places to go if tRump wins.
