  2. That’s why all of Europe needs a collective tightening. Never mind the UK, they’re just blowing smoke. Everybody should be having a look at Denmark at the mo. Enough scamming. These systems were implemented to preserve life when scumbag despots go after an innocent population, they were not implemented so you could run the equivalent of an Amazon call scam in a place besieged by internal issues.

  3. I said this the other day and got thumbed down to oblivion.

    I explained that during my Revenue work we, on an almost daily basis, encountered people with UK visas coming here and claiming asylum. We have a legal basis to turn them right around.

    There were issues over residency and tax compliance/fraud, as well as people trafficking and money laundering so that’s how I ended up working such cases. I advised it was likely driven by the Rwanda policy.

    I was called a liar.

    This is the second time now where Michael has come out saying the same thing I said.

    The first time was months back when I said there was evidence Ukrainians who were granted Temp Protection elsewhere already, were popping up here for our Social Welfare. I was called a liar then too until Mr Martin came out the following week to admit there was evidence this was actually going on.

    I won’t hold my breath on the apologies.

  7. The ESRI report from November last year noted it as a potential _minor_ cause of the increase in applications in Ireland.

    “The announcement of the MEDP occurred in April 2022, whereas the increase in Ireland began in February 2022, suggesting that the deal with Rwanda was unlikely to be a significant cause of the increase in Ireland. Nonetheless, the impact of the UK’s policies on migration to Ireland may be affecting applications from some nationalities for whom Ireland is in the same destination cluster as the UK. For some nationalities that typically apply for asylum in both Ireland and the UK (e.g., Zimbabwean and South African),
    the reduction in applications in the UK and the increase in applications in Ireland may reflect a deflection effect from the UK to Ireland.”

    It would make sense that any such effect would have increased in the time since, though it still seems unlikely to be overly significant.

  9. To avoid the still hypothetical risk of being deported to Rwanda, they choose to come to Ireland where they won’t get homed and there are no jobs available.

    I don’t think a person who’s made a life changing and arduous journey to look for a better life is going to be that stupid. They do their research, that’s how they know the ins and outs of immigration law in every country along the way. There’s literally no incentive to come here.

    Mícheál is just testing out talking points for the election.

  12. Actually saying this publicly is playing into the daft policy.
    Brutish courts ruled there own policy wasn’t legal. It’s been proven the cash they still have to pay Rwanda for the scheme could pay for enough staff to clear their asylum caseload backlog with change.

    So the tory party literally had no ammo, there really right wing group were pissed the policy wasn’t working, there less right were pissed at the money wasted and anyone remotely closed to moderate backed the courts…. but hey ho we come out and say its working…..

    Rishi was polling worse than Boris when he resigned we literally just needed to keep our mouth shut for a few weeks.
    For context the plan hasn’t successfully sent a single flight to Rwanda yet….
