GP centre won’t prescribe ‘highly addictive’ painkillers due to concerns over illegal drug trade

  1. They only just noticed? I’ve been walking over empty Xanax blister packs on the street for many years.

  2. Completely refusing to prescribe certain medications that are effective because people might become addicted to them seems like a cop out on care. Surely they should be prescribed as needed and with close supervision and monitoring by the doctors. It seems inappropriate for doctors to refuse to make use of certain medications because they don’t want to. I don’t think it would be an issue if there were alternatives but for pain often there isn’t.

Obviously we don’t want a US style opioid crisis but we shouldn’t just leave people in pain.

I’ve fucked up my back twice and both times got two or three days worth of valium before switching to paracetamol. It helped significantly with the pain while I was injured, and I stopped once my prescription was done. I don’t think I should have been left in pain and not prescribed needed painkillers because of a hypothetical risk.
