Why Brianna Ghey police quickly ruled out transphobia as motive

  1. From what I’ve read it seems like they were planning on murder regardless of the victim.

The trans part of it seemed to only come into it during. But as far as a motive or any planning it wasn’t specifically to attack a trans person?

  2. I mean she was on the shortlist of potential victims because she was trans, and then eventually murdered because she was perceived as the most vulnerable..because she was trans.

Sure the kid was using dehumanising and transphobic language to describe her but that’s just bants and is obviously totally unrelated to the murder! It’s not like the kid would lie about his motivation in court, he’s not a MONSTER /s

You can say what they did and get done for a hate crime but if you kill the person afterwards then that’s fine, no hate there. Fucking disgusting.

  3. The police had access to more information than we had, the prosecution was brought, and the murderers have been convicted.

They seem to have been quite deranged – but the important part is they’re convicted now.

  4. It is odd how ferverently and loudly this sub seems to make sure everyone knows it wasn’t deemed a hate crime, yet how silent it is when thinking about how the media and government might negatively impact trans people…

  5. It was opportunistic transphobia, essentially. They were going to kill someone, she was just there, and since she was trans, welp, even better target.

I don’t know what their sentences are/will be, but undoubtedly it will be an insult to Ghey, the trans community and the people at large.

  6. The girl is dead, killed by two evil and twisted people.

I feel like debating their motive – whether it was just to murder *anyone*, or to specifically kill a trans person *because* she was trans, or if it was “opportunistic transphobia” – is often an attempt to politicise the death of an innocent child, whichever side of this discussion you are on.

Whether the motive was transphobia or not, deciding their motive on Reddit isn’t going to bring her back or help her loved ones overcome the unimaginable grief of losing her. I don’t understand how “winning” an argument online to prove the motive either way is going to help anyone.

She should be left to rest in peace without this unnecessary political squabbling…

  7. This seems like such a strange cop-out. Everyone who read the texts presented in the trial could see that their entire focus on Brianna as the victim was around her transgender identity.

I don’t see how it follows that, although they targeted her over her trans identity, the fact that they might also have targeted other people for other non-transphobic reasons, means that they didn’t choose **her** for transphobic reasons? It just seems like a lazy way to avoid a difficult conversation.

I appreciate that prosecuting authorities understandably want to keep the line of argument as simple as possible for jury trials, but this feels like it is ceding ground for the sake of that?
