For those who can’t read german i’ll quickly summarise the story.
My Grandpa Norbert and Uwe were close friends who frequented bars regularly. One day Grandpa let Uwe watch his kids (My mum and aunt), who assaulted them. My Grandpa was obviously livid and went out to kill Uwe. He managed to stab him in the throat with a knife, but a few minutes later Uwe pulled out the knife and stabbed my Grandpa back. They were driven to the same hospital in the same ambulance. Uwe recovered from his injuries but my Grandpa’s wound had an infection, which took his eyesight and hearing in one ear. Both sued one another. Uwe was given a prison sentence of just 3 years. What wasn’t covered in the article is that my Grandpa had to pay Uwe “Schmerzgeld” or personal injury compensation.
Uwe denied having assaulted my mother and my aunt, but both of them remember what happened.
My mum has been paranoid and having nightmares as long as i knew her. Recently my great aunt passed away and we went through her stuff, where we found an old article on what happened and some old images. Since this happened over 40 years ago and i can find him neither on social media, nor in a phone book, I assume that Uwe is dead. However i’d like my mum to be able to live the rest of her life in peace. If anyone knows how i can find out whether he’s still alive or not, please help.
(Yes I know that private investigators are a thing, but i don’t have the money for that.)

Depends how much information you have. If you know the city where he live(s/d) then you can ask the local office wether he is still registered there.
The easiest way is looking for orbituaries, most people get one in a local newspaper.
