2. I would hope that China, for all its faults, would deep-six that idea. The Russian ambassador in Tashkent denied that Russia planned to annex Central Asia, but it’s clear that such sentiments are widespread in Russia, particularly among the “patriotic” ultra-nationalist ex-military community.

5. It’s strategic communication aimed at the west as well as domestic audiences.

   Message to the west:

   “We’re not fully committed in Ukraine, see, we even think about starting new wars and annexing other countries and you can’t stop us. That’s how powerful we are. So supporting Ukraine is pointless.”

   To me that sounds like a gambler who has to go all in in hope of preventing a serious loss.

   Russia only has a chance of victory in Ukraine if the west stops supporting Ukraine. That’s why there have been so many efforts at dismantling western support.

   Remember all those stories about how Ukraine sent weapons to Hamas, or how Ukraine supposedly sold western weapons on the black market… In the end it was proven to be insubstantial lies, but it was aimed at western audiences.

   And to the domestic audiences it probably is a means to deflect from Ukraine and play down the importance of the two week smo.
