  1. I hadn’t realised until recently that the northern counties backed the treaty based off assurances that the border commission would take care of the rest. Hence why the topic of the north wasnt as prevalent in the debates as the Oath of Allegiance.
    With the northern support the treaty passed, but once the majority got what they wanted the north was cast aside and abandoned. Collins did send arms up to the IRA to protect them against the b specials but its a shame he died , who knows what might have been different had he been alive.
    As a proud Mayo man, this is one of the great stains of Irish history, the abandonment of the nationalists to the Protestant state.
