It’s worth mentioning that all of it happened amid a legal mess that PiS left behind. Effectively, there is no institution left that can replace the board of directors and the CEO of the public broadcaster, and there are legal proceedings taking place/about to take place to restore an institution with appropriate powers overseeing TVP and associates. However, the new government managed to use a loophole in the law- as there is no institution with appropriate powers at the moment, the management of TVP fell back to a default mechanism of treating it as a regular public company, and expressed its will as the majority shareholder to change the board of directors.
If there was ever a case when you have to act in the law grey zone – this was it.
Maybe changing the board was outside of the law framework, but the PIS propaganda tube for public money was one of the most disgusting features of the country I’ve ever seen.
Also: the real majority of pupulation who recently voted for change of goverment (70% turnout) supports this.
Of course politico will side with the authoritarians. PiSS also calls it a revolution.
What is important, this is not the case of “government” take over of the media.
This broadcaster for 8 years was under direct control of single party that was ruling, pushing awful propaganda.
Steps taken in recent days are basically removing all of that single party (PIS) influence and restoring it to a public broadcaster status with the aim of it being independent of the government. So in the essence, government took action but not control over it.
