Is this true?!

  1. Aye, it’s talked about in the James Herriot vet stories which took place in Yorkshire in the 30s.

And, for the record, it’s delicious. Wenslydale, for preference.

  2. Yes, and not just ‘up north’. Totally normal to have either strong cheddar or blue cheese with a fruitcake. (Not wensleydale usually but that’s my least favourite cheese so I may have just blanked out moments when it’s been served…)

  3. I’m trying to decide if this is blasphemous or not. Seems so wrong, but then so does ham, pineapple, and cheese and that is so right!

  4. You know, that would probably work with Wensleydale. It’s quite a sweet cheese and it pairs well with fruit like apricot or cranberries, so I can see that working with a bit of fruit cake.

  5. Whilst I don’t personally like christmas cake as a born and raised Yorkshireman I can confirm some of the population enjoy a bit a cheese with their cake.

  6. It’s delicious.

I tell you what else is surprisingly awesome. Bit of stilton melted on top of a mince pie.

  7. It’s the only way I will eat Christmas cake. Although I give away all of the icing and marzipan so it;s just fruitcake with cheese. Wensleydale definitely best.

  8. And in High Peak. Also toast and jam with cheese. Beautiful

  9. Yeah my wife and her family got me onto it. It’s pretty good with a sharp cheddar.

  10. I’m not a fan of Christmas cake but I can see this actually being quite nice.

Chunks of cheese with equal-sized pieces of apple is god-tier combo. So why not this fruity/cheesy mash-up?

  11. My grandad used to fry up old Christmas cake in lard or butter and serve it with bacon and cheese on the side.

I am surprised he didn’t die instantly after eating it.

  12. You’re going to lose your mind when you find out mince pies generally had actual mince in them.

    > Mix together 8 ounces of seedless raisins, 12 ounces of currants, **6 ounces of minced, lean rump steak**, 12 ounces of fresh, chopped suet, 8 ounces of dark brown sugar, 1 ½ ounces of dried mixed peel, ¼ grated nutmeg, 12 ounces of apples that have been peeled, cored, and grated and the zest and juice of half a lemon. When all has been incorporated, mix in 2 ½ fluid ounces of brandy.

  13. Can’t say I’m from that part of the country, but cake and a sweet cheese like wensleydale makes sense in my head. Maybe not in my heart, though 😅

  14. I’ve not had this, but makes perfect sense to me. Fruit + cheese = yum.

  15. Yeah, it is a thing and I tried it some years back when spending Christmas at a friends house, and they came out with “Anyone fancy some Christmas Cake and Cheese?”.

I thought they meant separately, but then watched in horror. Tried it, but can’t remember what I thought of it. But hey, I am still here 😂

  16. Yes it’s definitely a thing if you’re from York. I’ve tried it and bizarrely it does actually taste quite nice

  17. Tried this for the first time the other week, it’s amazing.

  18. Yep, my mum used to love Christmas cake and cheese. She liked apple pie with cheese as well!

Edit: it’s not just a Yorkshire thing either, she was from Bolton!

  19. Yep it’s totally normal. Lots of cheeses work with Xmas cake! Tastes delicious

  20. It’s a rather common thing cheese goes very well with Christmas cake the flavours offset eachother very well

  21. I’m Italian (I lived in Oxford for a bit) and it looks delish to me

  22. Yes this is true, I was told I was odd by my wife who is from down south.

  23. My wife’s family are originally from Yorkshire and they do this. I’m not a fan.

  24. Every new year, just after singing Auld Lang Syne, my mum (who’s from Yorkshire) gives everyone a coin, whiskey and a small piece of Christmas cake with cheese.

So definitely a thing, and goes down well

  25. I’m southern, wife’s family is from Yorkshire, the gran always whips out homemade Christmas cake with Wensley dale cheese, at first I was super sceptical but it is actually quite nice

  26. Booths (posh northern food shop) sells Xmas cake specifically for eating with cheese 🧀.

  27. All year ‘round, not just Christmas. Fruit cake and Wensleydale is lovely.

  28. I’m not from Yorkshire, but I think I have a spiritual connection to the place. As such me and my partner love Christmas cake and cheese

  29. Also put honey and coffee granuals on the top. It’s so strange but it is perfect.

  30. *Checks date* December 21st… *shrugs* must be

  31. Stilton ( or similar if you must ) on a warm mince pie is heavenly too

  32. I’m a southerner & I sometimes eat them together. I’ve also put grated Wensleydale in my pastry when making an apple pie

  33. I’ve lived in Yorkshire most of my life, an I’ve never seen anyone doing this

  34. In Worcestershire (although the in-laws are originally from Walsall) it’s Christmas cake and Stilton. The only way I can imagine myself maybe one day trying Christmas cake. But for now I will stick with gingerbread biscuits with Stilton!

  35. I feel like this is April and this is a setup to throwing up everywhere.

  36. Surprised you’ve never heard of it frankly. Nationwide, it was the traditional way to eat it since victorian times. Try it! It’s a good balance of flavours and textures!
