How early are they getting up though? Leo was specific in who he was gonna help.
Problem is they’re sleeping too much, 5-10 cans of Monster a day, get a 3rd or a 4th job then they’ll be able to afford to live.
Some recommendations from the report:
– Setting a target of 20% of all housing stock to be social housing;
– Allowing local authorities and approved housing bodies pool resources to finance increased supply in a sustainable way;
– Developing a system of affordable rent;
– Enforcing the vacant site levy.
But what about the poor landlords income how will they survive if their rent decreases
One mans rent is another mans income after all
We all just need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps while simultaneously making our own coffee at home.
It’s called multi-tasking, people.
If people could just reduce their avocado consumption by 15% they’d be able to afford 6 houses!
Its almost as if landlords are in charge of housing policy.
I, for one, am shocked that giving people money has not magically created more houses where those people want/need to live
The fact that you need to save up a deposit to prove you can pay a mortgage is a problem. Most people are already affording rent that is more expensive than a mortgage. Allow rent as proof instead of deposits. Also rent controls nationally. Stop protecting landlords.
“For those in receipt of rent subsidies, such as Housing Assistance Payment (HAP), the poverty rate increases from 22.7% pre-rent payment to 55.9% after rent.”

Kind of important to remember that those who receive HAP and RAS, are receiving them *because* they’re in poverty. Not saying the calculation after rent is not important, just that they’re a unique group. HAP and RAS payments are a really important lifeline for people, [especially lone parents](https://www.esri.ie/publications/social-transfers-and-deprivation-in-ireland-a-study-of-cash-and-non-cash-payments-tied). Orgs that criticise these schemes often fail to mention this.
Saw three places to rent in and around Cork City within my budget last week (Under 1050). The most promising one was taking off Daft within 20 minutes, the other two were gone by the end of the day. Viewings for all 3 didn’t start until the following week. The market is insane at the moment. Thankfully I can stay with my parents as long as I need. I really don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have a place to stay.
The government don’t care. It’s plainly obvious at this point they are prioritising keeping the housing market competitive over solving the crisis. That is why we get half assed measures. Every policy introduced is done so with investors and landlords in mind.
More like ffg aren’t working!
Never been more ashamed to be Irish SMFH , people like you are why these people need help in the first place, raising prices every dam year , and so what if he has a nice “” tv or fridge”” you all suck
But if we don’t shunt more and more people into poverty, how will we ensure wealth stays in the hands of a tiny minority of the population?
the help to buy went up to 30k a year ago and that day prices went up 30k immediately.
Its FG ideology.
They are Tory/thatcherite wannabes.
What i cant seem to understand is why FF are more then happy to go along with this policy of avoiding any meaningful srate building of social housing when it was what FF traditionally did to get votes.
They are only leaking support to the shinners.
It seems to me that FG have sown up the homeowners/somewhat well off class and FF trying to maintain some of that demographic. Both parties are doing nothing for renters or first time buyers.
They need to make it that the landlord and agent are accountable for documenting all issues with the property as well as surveyors report.
That information should be made public before renting/selling.
You will see a more realistic price range then.
What about a ban on companies like Kennedy Wilson buying for rent?
This good faith narrative of “X is not working” is naive and tiresome. Housing subsidies are working exactly as intended – as a transfer of wealth from normal folk to landlords. If the government wanted to deal with poverty related to housing, rent controls tied to a set percentage of the average industrial wage would be brought in.
As almost a third of FF-FG TDs are landlords it is hardly surprising that there is no political will for this.
Tax cardboard boxes it will push people to get a third job and they government can make even on taxes. Now where did I leave my middle finger the one thing I’ll happily give the robberment
In one of the strongest economies in the world. Ireland needs a revolution.
My theory: they want high prices to maximise bank profits and accelerate the full transfer of banks to private ownership for maximum return to the State. This is why NAMA sits on countless properties and areas of land, choking supply to continue inflation for this exact purpose.
Let me guess. Most of the money ended up in the pockets of wealthy people and people are still struggling to pay for housing.
20% of the country depends on housing subsidies?
I know how to fix it. Put up the price of drink.
After paying rent: 19% of the population, 44.7% of renters, disabled et al. 55.9%. are below the poverty line. In a supposed first world country, that is absolutely disgusting! Anybody care to hazard a guess at what the total rental payments would be for all the country in a calendar month?
Most subsidies don’t work. Here’s something that does:
* Government provides land for new homes to private contractor/developer at reduced cost.
* Developer builds homes with a maximum set price regardless of market influences.
* Sales are limited to first time buyers, non-institutional buyers and buyers within a defined income range. Sales are on a first come first served basis or a lottery of qualified buyers.
* Buyers should meet all standard lending criteria to avoid future foreclosure crises. Resales and resale pricing are limited.
This keeps government out of the project beyond land acquisition which is one of the largest drivers of unit cost. Government can also use eminent domain to aid in redevelopment of derelict areas.
I’ve worked on projects like this with state governments and they work well.
This is going to be controversial, but part of the issue is that *some* people are having too many kids they can’t afford and looking for the state to raise them. It seems the way to get HAP, social housing and all the support is to have multiple kids with low/no income. Unfortunately having multiple kids when you can’t afford them is feeding into a cycle of poverty, and at that point it actually doesn’t pay you to work and contribute to society
I watched the “24 hours in police custody” documentary the other night about the baby murdered in the UK, which led me to this, which was very thought provoking:
There is a family homeless shelter near me. I feel for these families but they hang out in the park and I am yet to see a 1 or 2 kid family. Most of them are 4-10 kids and the parents are sitting there smoking on a park bench whilst the kids throw litter. The kids didn’t ask to be born into this.
Until we start to support people who wait to have kids, people with smaller families or those working in minimum to even the average industrial wage, we are encouraging this cycle of putting kids in poverty in order to get more social welfare. How can we encourage responsible family planning and support those who want to provide a better life for themselves and their families Vs those looking to play the system? I pay a lot of tax and am happy to do so if it gives people who deserve it a helping hand.
I’m sure I will be heavily downvoted for this but my heart breaks for these kids who didn’t ask to be born into this. And I DON’T mean those who work hard and just want to provide a home and stability for their kids.
Nothing new there..
But we have one of the highest GDP’s in the world! I see that as a reference constantly as to how great Ireland is doing but articles like this paint a far more real picture. Ireland is turning into a great country for some people and and an increasingly not great country for the rest.
Oh how our revolutionary leaders would be turning in their graves.
I (39) Voted in every election since I registered at 18. At my wits end. I’ll give my vote to Sinn Féin. Nothing ever seems to change with FF/FG. They bailed out the banks without a thought. They sold our housing market to the Vultures. The linked rent to an index which jumped 10% in my area as soon as the first corona v wave was over. I feel like there is no other option. I’ll have some choice words for the sorry individual representing ff/fg who calls to MY PARENTS door next election.
