Hello, I’m British and my wife is Latvian. We’ve been married for nearly two years and my wife is planning on changing her name to mine when she renews her passport in a few years. She’s looking in to it and has come across a government page that states she can be fined for not informing them that she’s married, which needed to have been done within 30 days.

It kinda makes sense if she’d changed her name, but she hasn’t done and we’re concerned about paying this penalty. Has anyone else come across this, is it relaxed or are we going to have to pay up?

Link and relevant text below. Liels paldies.

  1. Just send the info and write some nice story why you did not inform sooner. I think no one will fine you… maybe a warning. You have to do it anyway

  2. Well the fact of the matter is that you will have to report anyways. Make sure to report as soon as possible and hope for the best. Maybe if you start the process this week, they will give you a little slack as a Christmas greeting.

  3. Just do it now and relax. As long as her marital status hasn’t caused any legal troubles (like her hiding it and trying to marry someone else), there will most likely be no fines.

I got married in Denmark and informed the Latvian officials a year later. Didn’t even know there was a potential fine (my anxiety is very thankful for this).
