  1. This is huge. Restoring Wisconsin’s democracy is beyond overdue.

  2. >The legislative electoral maps drawn by the Republican-controlled Legislature in 2011 cemented the party’s majorities, which now stand at 64-35 in the Assembly and a 22-11 supermajority in the Senate.

    >Since taking the majority in 2011, Republicans have enacted a wide range of conservative priorities. They have all but eliminated collective bargaining for public workers, and since 2019 they’ve been a block on Evers’ agenda, firing Evers appointees and threatening impeachment of Protasiewicz and the state’s elections leader.

    >The ruling comes one month after the court heard oral arguments in the case in November. The state elections commission has said maps must be in place by March 15 if the new districts are to be in play for the 2024 election.

  3. Between this, New York redrawing their maps, and the few southern states forced to draw new black majority districts, this puts democrats in a very strong position to retake the house next year, no?

  4. And we’ll expect the defendants to appeal to SCOTUS to make the current map stand.

  5. Having suffered this bullshit since 2011, this is an absolutely massive win for Wisconsinites.

  6. Absolute giant win for democracy. About fucking time.

  7. As a Wisconsin resident and native, THANK GOD. It’s been a long road to get here and I am happy that this means folks will represent the people and not themselves. Hopefully this means Wisconsin will return to normal and cooperate across the isle.

Also, love this little poison pill, so the republicans cannot delay.

    >The court in a 4-3 decision released Friday afternoon said the court is also prepared to replace the state’s heavily gerrymandered maps if the Legislature and Democratic governor cannot agree on a new plan.

  8. fun fact: in the 2018 state assembly elections democrats got 52% of the popular vote. Despite this republicans still won a wide majority of the seats, with 63R – 36D.

  9. Did the republicans in WI give up on the impeachment threat?

  10. Sometimes politics moves really frustratingly slow. Walsh Bradley was reelected in 2015, Dallet was elected in 2018, Karofsky was elected in 2020 and Protasiewicz was elected in 2023. These were the four liberal justices that overturned the GOP’s gerrymandering and if any of those candidates had lost their races then the gerrymander would have stood. Thank you to all the people who tirelessly fought for democracy in all of those years and thank you to the people who will be fighting for it come 2024. Just because progress doesn’t happen overnight doesn’t mean that change is impossible.

  11. Funny how the conservative justices use nothing but partisan attacks in their dissenting opinion against the majority. Who’s the putting politics into the conversation now?

And, Republicans can try to appeal this to a federal court, but SCOTUS already said that the federal judiciary has no jurisdiction over state partisan gerrymander cases

  12. Seems to me that the dissenting justices are oblivious to the constitutional mandate that the districts be contiguous.

  13. Awesome that was much faster than I thought! That help with a happy holidays!! 🙂

  14. Next time dems get a majority in wisconsin, if they do, they need to introduce a constitutional amendment to allow ballot initiatives so that voters can fix things in case republicans ever retake a majority.

  15. I’m so happy for you, Wisconsin! Finally some justice

  16. It’s what the GOP has feared since they rigged the system. I’m anxious to see what illegal, fascist bullshit they try to pull to avoid loosening their grip on power.

  17. Hopefully they actually enforce this and don’t just let the Republicans run out the clock. That happened in another state and the GOP official statement was “Game is up. Sorry, Dems. You lose.”.

  18. that should also be good up-ballot right? Next election you’ll have the electorate motivated to show up to vote for a representative who really represents their constituency and that would increase turnout at the federal level too

  19. For the first time in a decade and a half, Wisconsin has a chance to oust the Republicans who tore down the state from 2010-2018, and stonewalled Tony Evers’ efforts to make things better since then. Abortion rights, union rights, Medicaid expansion – it’s all on the table.

But we’ve still got to earn it.

Today’s ruling ensures a fair playing field. But we still have to win the game. The next year, Dems have to recruit candidates for those new districts, support them in their races, and make sure every Dem voter goes to the polls.

And a big part of that is our job – especially if you live in Wisconsin, but it’s possible to help from everywhere.

You can help by voting, but also by knocking doors for Dem candidates. If you’re not in Wisconsin, you can make phone calls, send texts, or write postcards to Wisconsin voters. Every one of these actions gets more voters to the polls. And now that gerrymandering won’t screw the vote, there’s a real chance of good people taking charge.

If you want to do your part to help this, get over to r/VoteDEM and get signed up to volunteer for Dems. We can do it if we work together!

The past year, we’ve watched Michigan and Minnesota transform under Democratic leadership. Next year, it’s Wisconsin’s turn.

  20. “Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos called it “a sad day for our state” and suggested it would be appealed, saying the U.S. Supreme Court would have the final say.”

Roberts court has been of the position that state districts aren’t under their purview, it’s for state courts to review. They re-affirmed that in Moore vs Harper. Good luck with that dumbass.

  21. Wisconsin resident here. This is HUGE! The gQp are always pulling this shit. So nice to have it reaffirmed that the Dems go high when they go low!

  22. This is awesome! I hope they actually follow though this time. If they do, Wisconsin could be a success like Michigan.

  23. Wisconsin has been absolutely doing great this year. I’m assuming they finally got a democratic majority, since things seem to be improving not getting worse lol

  24. The WisGOP are even worse than most state level GOP: this isn’t over, they will exhaust every means available to attempt to keep their stolen seats.

I won’t believe the effort successful until the maps are actually in place.
