This is a song sung by a Ukrainian folk band ‘Drevo’ – it is a reconstruction of a very old holiday song associated with the winter holidays (but back then these types of songs, though without Christianized lyrics, were sung year-round!). It is from the village of Selets’ in the Zhytomyr region.

    The image you see in the video is a painting called ‘Kolyada’, painted by Ivan Honchar in 1972; he was a famous ethnographer and artist and who started the extensive collection that became the Ivan Honchar Museum in Kyiv. This collection is an amazing resource for Ukrainian cultural history, and artifacts from its archive have appeared in very many of these posts.
