1. Such a bizarre story, they’re protesting that a private landowner who got planning permission isn’t doing what they want?

   The sheer entitlement is something else

2. For people who refuse to read the article, the loss of a nursing home is just one of the problems that they’re bringing up. Their primary school is at capacity, the bank closed down, along with other businesses. They don’t have the facilities to cope and are calling for more investment in the area, including a nursing home before more asylum seekers are located to that area.

3. The reality is that if you were to naturally increase the population of the country by building houses and apartments, you’d need planning that complies to the NDP and local development plan. That doesn’t apply when you acquire an existing building

4. The nursing home would have been run as a privately funded venture I suppose whereas this is public state money, the question is will the capital development for the hotel, if it happens also be funded by Dept of Social Welfare?

   Is this just easy money for the owners?

5. It’s cases like this that give credence to the claims of the far right. A smug retort along the lines of it’s former refugees who move on to staffing nursing homes will not appease people’s frustration.

6. Big fuck you to old folks who worked to build this country up ain’t it. This isn’t the only greedy owner of an old folks home that has done this too.

7. All these complaints about immigrants overloading these areas and yet they’ll be overloaded regardless due to lack of investment from the gov. Getting their nursing home isn’t going to increase school capacity or bring back their local banks and other businesses.

   Irish people are still being born here, and we need extra capacity full stop. They should be protesting the wider issue and stop letting their protests get hijacked by xenophobic gobshites.

8. I’m going to repeat this until I’m blue in the face because it’s true even if people don’t want to hear it – the nursing home sector is failing. It doesn’t matter what they’re being turned into instead, nursing homes aren’t viable in their own right. A third of them run at a loss and that figure is only going up, we are heading for absolute disaster in our old age care in this country, and nobody seems to give a fuck unless they can use it for their own angle.

   Without major government intervention they’re going to keep closing or being repurposed no matter what else is happening in the world. When all those Millenials who can’t afford homes or rent start aging out of work what’s going to happen them?
