No they weren’t. They were given a choice and decided to vote against themselves. Actions have consequences, they are getting exactly what they voted for.
Desperate people do desperate things I guess. The gamble here was to trust notoriously dishonest politicians sadly.
No worries: always the smuggling trade to fall back on.
the interesting tidbit that stuck out to me was this:
“He says the Scottish industry has benefited from Brexit. The quota share for multi-million-pound trawlers catching fish like mackerel in the North Sea and north Atlantic has increased. But West Country boats were “sold a dream”.”
funnily I saw a similar article about how well Brixham is doing in the south of england post brexit celebrating their biggest year ever. The daily mail did a horrific piece on it putting all the success on brexit, but the actual owner of the business wrote a more tempered piece for a local paper saying it was because they were an already big company that was well prepared for the extra paper work and had invested in new technology that helped them through the pandemic. But also the rest of the fishing industry in the south and south east of england have all but collapsed and now all the trawlers are offloading in Brixham. Jersey fishermen are going to brixham now because they cant go to france directly anymore. Thats actually the only one he mentions as a ‘brexit benefit’
It really sinks in that despite how it was crowed and held up during the campaign the fishing industry isnt a single industry its so many different types of businesses shoved under one heading and there really isnt and there is as much in fighting and competition within the fishing industry itself and all brexit seems to be doing is letting the bigger companies finally push out the smaller ones.
The leopard’s are getting kinda overweight after eating so many brexit voters faces.
It’s Austerity all over again, people believed the Tories lies about “fixing the roof” and all similar stuff. Now here we are with every single public service on it’s knees.
Brexit consequences just happened a lot quicker but it’s the same thing.
I’m sure they’ll all vote labour the next election, like they have not done for literally decades…
Those black passports we haven’t been able to use have made it worth it tho. Right?
The problem with dreams is you wake up and have to deal with reality once more. One year on and fishermen are finally facing up to the reality that they were used by the government as propaganda for Brexit. Farage was on the fisheries committee while an MEP, he turned up to one of 42 meetings. Fishermen were fools to team up with someone whose opinion on fishing were well known long before Brexit and are paying the price for that.
Fishermen sold a kipper more like. We all knew this was a fantasy not a dream.
Farage’s voting record on fishing ‘makes mockery’ of new election poster Publication date: 9th April 2015
UKIP’s new election poster unveiled in Grimsby today highlights the plight of fishing businesses that have been ‘gutted due to the EU’. Greenpeace has responded that UKIP’s voting record in the European Parliament and Nigel Farage’s appalling attendance on the Fisheries Committee makes a mockery of UKIP’s claim to be standing up for fishermen.
Over the three years that Nigel Farage was a member of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee, he attended one out of 42 meetings. Greenpeace research released today shows that during the three major votes to fix the flaws of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), Nigel Farage was in the building but failed to vote in favour of improving the legislation.
Live in a fishing area. Most fishermen here are immigrants. Fishing is a shite job, very dangerous and the wages hugely variable. Most boats are owned by the same family, the few independents are mostly hobby offshore fishermen.
They had the same bullshit lines thrown at them that the rest of us did.
Surely fishermen would know that we export more to the eu than we sell to the uk?
The only positive thing about Brexit is Coronavirus. It has covered up the true disaster Brexit has been, starting with 1.3 TRILLION Pounds that exited the city of London and ending with Ford removing public listings of cars in stock because they had ONE Mondeo listed in stock, as the totality of their stock, in the United Kingdom and nothing else, over Christmas 2021. (This does not include stock on dealers forecourts). Source FordPass App.
Fishermen were sold the same Brexit as everyone else, this is Brexit… Sorry you were to stupid or lazy to look at what you were voting for I guess.
Sold a dream? That sounds a strangely upbeat choice of words.
Sold a lie, surely?
If you are pro EU, you shouldn’t be mocking people who are essentially saying they made a mistake. The last thing that’s going to make someone become a voting force for the same thing you want, is making fun of them and shrugging your shoulders and saying “you’re an idiot then”.
Let people realise they make a mistake, and make them actually feel welcome rather than being a smug prick about how we were right all along.
There’s only one way we get back to where we want to be, and that’s by having people who realised their mistake on our side and voting the same way.
Edit: the replies to this have been eye opening.
Edit edit: I am, and have been for a long time, a European federalist.
Edit edit edit: I’m extremely disheartened by the replies at this point. I’d always hoped we – collectively – would be able to swing sentiment back to the point where in 10 years or so we would restart the process to join the EU again. Some of you are so rabid and fanatical about punishing people who admit they were fooled that it looks like that won’t happen.
Maybe they will wake up when voting in future general elections and referendums but I doubt it.
Christ all these fishermen do is whinge and moan. Nobody cares – either adapt or re-skill into something else.
> “There’s a feeling of getting on with it now… There are positives. We can find solutions and work towards 2026. I think everyone will push for the 12 mile limit to be imposed and quota share of certain species will be discussed. Hopefully the bigger boats get an easier ride too and can land in Europe and get a fair price for their bigger hauls”.
They should be dumping rotting fish outside number #10, but then they’d have to admit they’d been conned.
I know the fishermen/women are fucked, but what about the £350m per week to the NHS, that was a fucking massive dream – if I’m not mistaken that lying corrupt, incompetent and desparately under qualified wankmaggot Johnson point blank promised this and didn’t even blink when he let the bullshit fall out of his mouth, stood next to a massive red bus if I remember correctly.
You can’t say they weren’t told at the time, instead of listening they shouted project fear and buddied up with Farage.
They mistakenly thought their business was catching fish, when it was actually selling the caught fish to Europe
Congratulations you stupid cunts you get what you pay for
And those of us who are pro-EU who told them over and over again that it would kill their industry were ignored and shouted down. I can no longer find the will to give a fuck.
The maddening thing is that it was clear at the time the leave promises had more holes in them that the nets the fishermen use…
Yet, people listened. The country voted repeatedly for these lies as well. Standing back and saying ‘we got conned’ doesn’t do anything to help lessen the impact.
There are only ten thousand fishermen in the UK. Their votes didn’t make Brexit happen. They could all immediately become Pro-EU tomorrow and it wouldn’t make a dent.
And in their defence, as the people interviewed for the article say, they had politicians come to see them in person promising them the world. It’s quite a thing to have a nationally recognised politician come to your place of business and then lie right to your face.

The bigger problem is the millions of people who just saw some made up shit on Facebook that tickled their racism and accepted it as fact without thinking. Not to mention decades of the media generally blaming the EU for everything.
:'(
Never trust a Tory or that Frog-faced-Fecker-Farage.
I remember a coworker voted leave back in 2016. When leave won the exchange in the office went something like this:
friend: “I can’t believe they won”
me: “but you voted for leave”
friend: “but I didn’t want them to win”
me: “then why did you vote for them?”
I’ll never understand it.
No they weren’t. They were told up front what it entailed and chose not to believe it.
For someone who lives in Cornwall they deserve it. They were so opposed to the EU even though the EU grants helped Cornwall a lot. You couldn’t even have a conversation about staying in Europe without being treated like a traitor to your country. Every news episode was about fisherman saying how wonderful life would be after Brexit, Boris came down here and fed them lies and they lapped it up for reasons other than fishing and sovereignty. Honestly fuck them!
No body told them that fishing doesn’t make money, selling fish makes money. When 80% of the fish they sold went to Europe, they lost 80% of their profits…yay brexit.
I know several fishermen and spoke at length about this leading up to and then past the vote.
At every stage they made it very clear that their livelihoods were more important to them than anything else on the table, and demonstrated a distinct lack of clue about anything beyond catching and killing things that live in the sea.
To anyone who could be bothered to think for more than 5 seconds about any of the claims made by either side it was obvious what was coming. But they voted to leave. They were not sold a lie, they decided to believe in a myth born out of ignorance and anger and perpetuated by their own community.
No – you were sold a nightmare. You ignored the truth.
they also tried to fuck everyone else over, content that as long as they came out of it fine nothing else mattered.
they _were_ sold a dream but they were fucking morons for believing it.
It’s really frustrating that they didn’t apply any critical thinking before voting, and now they’re blaming obvious liars for obviously lying
EU: We give you enormous amounts of money to support yourselves because your own government does not, and we give you the ability to sell your product across tthe entire continent at no extra cost or difficulty.
Fishermen: No, i dont want that. bloody spanish fishermen stealing everything from us! Im voting to leave!
Fisherman, later: Oh.
“Nobody told us”..
Yes they did. Many people did, over and over. You might remember them, you called them “project fear” or something.
