I was surprised to see it list west Germany on the map.

  1. Why shouldn’t it? The DDR didn’t deny the existence of a western germany, they just claimed it was a US puppet state with an unfair and exploitative economic system

  2. One of the maps in the pirna ddr museum hanging in the classroom was just blank in the west. But that’s only one map of the few I’ve seen.

  3. Why it shouldn’t list West Germany? It’s a map of the GDR (DDR), which also shows neighboring countries.

There are several maps with holes in it. Similar things also happens if you you draw of North Amerika but only want to show details of the USA. there Canada often gets a blank space. But this map is still very interesting. You can clearly see, that the DDR had much more smaller federal states than it has today.

Back in those days those blank maps existed both ways. A lot of the maps of West Germany didn’t show any detail on east Germany and vice versa.

  4. Okay this gave me a great idea. I could download an HD map of Germany and make that into a puzzle and will finally help me remember where the major cities are… what Autobahn leads to where and what not…

I know, not relevant to your observation but damn this is my project next week!

  5. I had a similar puzzle showing West- and East-Germany. While the Bundesländer in the West all came in an individual colour the East German districts were greyish blue.

The cutouts were much more precise compared to the map puzzle pictured above.

  6. Why wouldn’t it be there? It wasn’t like they denied its existence, it was simply a foreign country like any other, so it gets the same treatment as the other bordering countries

  7. During my job I had to check passports.
    A small.interesting fact:
If you were born in Karl-Marx-Stadt which is now named Chemnitz, your passport looks like this:
Born date:dd/mm/yyyy in Karl-Marx-Stadt Now Chemnitz
