He’s completely correct. The media is doing a terrible job because the election being close means clicks. Democracy be damned.
There economy is strong. Things are still rough post covid, which was a global issue. The US had lower inflation then any G7 country. So instead of talking about how we feel as compared to typical years, we should talk about how the US is doing better than pretty much any other nation in the face of the global economic rough patch that was always going to happen when you shut down the supply chain for a year.
But the media is focused on the fact that a reduction of inflation, low unemployment, and a soaring such market don’t “feel” like a strong economy to many. The real story is that those are all signs of a strong economy that were not even remotely guaranteed, and a sustained strong economy will lead to a better economic situation for everyone.
“We avoided economic collapse and things are stabilizing after the covid pandemic. US leads the way in strong economic markers as the world economy recovers”. There. That’s the headline.
First, the biggest news networks and sources are owned by right-wing powers. Fox is still the biggest news network, and beyond that Americans by and large get news from social media which is dominated by right-wing propaganda. You have Twitter now owned by a major Biden opponent, for instance. Ultimately, these sources are never going to report it “the right way.”
By and large, the other mainstream sources, I’ve seen, tend to give Biden credit, while also pointing out the flaws and faults too. But only a minority of Americans get news from those sources anyway.
Second, this is all assuming there is a “right way” to report on something as complex as the economy, that there’s only one narrative to give. I always find it a little cringy when politicians chide the media like this, whether it’s Trump or Biden, since the press doesn’t exist to support or bolster them. Every president has to deal with a press which doesn’t tow their line, and that’s just part of the job. It’s up to them to push their own narrative, not the media.
Some of the media coverage has been fine. Some has been iffy. In general, I don’t think presidents should be weighing in much on this stuff. Wouldn’t want to end up in Trump territory where we’ve got another president lambasting the media.
I’ve heard plenty of positive assessments of the economy under Biden. The problem is that Democratic messaging is so weak compared to Republican hate mongering.
It’s not the media’s job to act as any president’s mouthpiece. Real income has fallen under Biden (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSA672N) and that’s cumulative, not one-time. You can’t gaslight people into thinking their groceries aren’t more expensive than they used to be.

People say the economy is bad, but they are still spending like the economy is good. And back in August a majority said they thought the economy was bad, but their own personal finances are good, which probably is still the case for a lot of people. Which just shows that a lot of the negative feeling on the economy is either political or people just jumping on the bandwagon because they here other people think the economy is bad.
