My kid still checked for snow first thing this morning. The optimism for a white Christmas is adorable. Hopefully stockings will help to soften the blow tomorrow.
It’s odd how Christmas week often seems to be pretty mild. I have a photo of me in my grandparents garden on Christmas Day 2003, wearing a long sleeved t-shirt with nothing over it, and as I remember I was not at all cold.
I’ve got grapes and tomatoes growing on vines in my garden at the moment, totally strange weather we have here now.
Most places in the Northern Hemisphere’s coldest months are January or February, not December so the days we associate with really cold snaps tend to be the depressing days after the New Year.
However, the reason the holiday season is around now comes from the winter solstice and adoption of the Roman festival of Saturnalia. All the festivities round now are really about cheering people during the shortest days rather than the coldest days.
Damn reindeers releasing all that methane in the upper atmosphere.
