  1. A beautiful memory with his father. Especially the drive home.

  2. Happy to see a story of an employer doing something good for their staff.

I think stuff like this is so much better than ‘one4all’ vouchers etc

  3. I’ve was once a part of something like this.

I remember when I lived in America, I worked at this barbecue place. And on Thanksgiving and Christmas, they would sell these whole smoked turkeys. God, they were delicious.

But at the end of the day, and because they’d be closed the next day, the staff got to take home what was left.

It was a similar situation where I’d watch people come in. With massive orders. Buying turkeys, brisket, and sausage, enough to feed 20 people. Dad’s coming in most often. All the kids are in town, Uncle Frank, his kids, his wife’s brother and his Mexican wife, and their kids. Americans love to tell their whole life story to anyone.

There was a massive refrigerated truck parked out the back that was full of turkeys that had been smoked and were being kept nice and chilled. People were buying loads. The place had a queue out the door. And for some reason, in America, people like cashiers or people working tills in the supermarket to stand all day. In any case, we were all tired, busy, and watching the turkeys fly out the door, which is a big ask for a flightless bird.

The day came to a close, about 10pm, doors locked, queue cleared, people gone, place cleaned. Tom, the manager, comes out of the office and tells us it was a record day for sales. We could give a shit, but also, duh, the place was insanely busy. Then he asks. “Who wants a free turkey?” The truck was empty, not a turkey to be found.

They’d all been moved to the walk in fridge inside. And there were stacks and stacks of them. I took home two turkeys. In the end I got sick of eating turkey sandwiches, turkey tacos, turkey whatever I could repurpose it as. But man did it feel good to walk out of there with those big birds and eat like a king for a couple weeks.
