These natural baubles are made by the marble gall wasp. Galls or ‘oak apples’ are distinctive swellings made by insects to give their offspring a safe place to live and grow. The gall can be used to make ink to write your late Christmas cards and traces of it have been found on the Dead Sea Scrolls. To complete our yuletide theme the marble gall wasp will need to find a Turkey oak (Q. cerris) to complete its lifecycle. Merry Christmas!
