The only thing I’ll say is the argument is always used that fuel is so expensive in Ireland and people need go be able to take turf from the land and burn it to stay warm during winter, but growing up the families who had turf land were never the poorest, I swear every guard went to the bog during summer.
Gross generalisation over.

Turf is dirtier than coal to burn and is less energy dense. It’s moronic that people are still burning such a valuable natural resource.
Did anyone see that Facebook group where they are triggered big time claiming turf isn’t a fossel fuel?
I’ve gotten some good laughs from it.
If you ever want to see how militant and crazy the turf cutting contingent get when alternatives to widescale habitat destruction are suggested check out the ‘barroughter and clonmoylan bogs action group’ on Facebook. Among the pro turf cutting posts there are many years of posts there doxxing NPWS employees, posting pictures of their houses and kids schools etc.
Yeah, I spent 40 years of hellish summers working in the bog. The last 20 on one specific area. I’ve seen the damage but carried on as it ” was what we always did” . I haven’t cut or saved turf for 6 years now and wish I’d stopped sooner to be honest.
> The continued destruction of Ireland’s peatlands is no different than the Amazon deforestation being facilitated by Bolsonaro, says an Irish Wildlife campaigner.
> “People look at what’s happening the Amazon and think ‘Oh my God, the guy in Brazil is a psychopath – we are doing exactly the same in Ireland,” Fogarty told Buzz.
> “The industrialisation of our peatlands has basically been open pit mining like what we see in Canada looking at tar sands.
Sorry, still not getting the message. Maybe framing it around another foreign issue would help?
