Hey everyone,

I signed up to Kingfisher Gym last August and went to the gym for quite a few months but my gym buddies no longer go and I don’t like going to the gym alone so I’m looking to cancel.

I live in Waterford and I signed up for the €35/month Direct Debit membership with a “minimum term of 12 months”.

I’m obviously looking to cancel earlier before that 12 month period but don’t really know about how to do it. Wouldn’t I be breaching contract and somehow be liable to legal trouble?

I don’t really understand or see anything in the terms and conditions in terms of what to do or if it’s possible to quit early.

I heard a few people say that you should just cancel the Direct Debit and write them a letter.

I also don’t want to be like “banned” from the gym either in case I ever want to sign back up.

    You agreed to the terms at the time of signing and the contract is for 12 months

    Cancelling the Direct Debit is a bad idea. I don’t know why people persist in thinking this is a good solution.

    OP, as you get older you’re going to find it harder and harder to get someone to go to the gym with you regularly. You’re better off getting used to going on your own now if you’re any way interested in it.

  4. Tell them you are moving abroad and have canceled the direct debit. Say you might be back in 2 years and will see if you want to join then.
    Don’t pay any fee’s or fines. Just refuse if they try to get you to.
