>The current districts are based on heavily gerrymandered boundary lines drawn by a GOP-controlled government in 2011. The maps helped shore up the state legislature’s Republican majority in the 2022 election. Wisconsin Republicans currently hold a 64-35 majority in the Assembly and a 22-11 supermajority in the state Senate.
>The court will allow the state legislature and Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, to take a first stab at approving new maps. But if they cannot agree — as was the case in 2020, which led to the present-day maps — the court will take over drawing new maps.
So, another round of bullshit, then they get maps drawn by a third party. We know the next maps will be garbage, we’ve seen this play out in half a dozen other states. I hope the third party is already working on the maps and ready to go as soon as the State created are deemed garbage…
This is good news, but republicans will continue to obstruct and delay as much as possible. And even with fairer maps we will still have to turn out and beat them at the ballot box. Stay strong, my friends. 2024 is going to be pivotal
This only appears to apply to the state legislature, unfortunately. So, gerrymandering at the national level races in Wisconsin is still in play.
The Republicans are going to do everything in their power to drag them out past the point where they cannot be implemented in time for the 2024 elections. Ohio Republicans not only managed to get their corrupt maps for the 2022 election, they will get to use them again in 2024 despite their Supreme Court ordering fair maps.
Expect the state legislature to delay AND not comply, or submit an unacceptable/worse alternative, so the court better be ready to step in and create their own constitutional maps.
Amen
Robin Vos, a Republican and Speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly, said: *”It’s a sad day when the WI State Supreme Court said just last year that the existing lines are constitutional.”* HAHAHA!
Really? What did Vos say when SCOTUS overturned 50 yrs of precedent in Roe v Wade and several appeals/challenges over those years upholding it?
**The only thing that changed** over those 50 yrs. was the balance of the court, with politically biased RW cons being appointed w/the specific intent to overturn it.
They’ll put one persons house in a new district and submit that map.
They’ll just keep doing that until it is too late and the old map will have to be used.
I don’t know why courts give such long times to do something.
Change your maps–you have one week and one try or else we’ll do it.
Note that the reason for this is the current districts are not contiguous as required by the Constitution of Wisconsin. This isn’t in real dispute. 2 plus 2 is not five.
I keep hearing “I’m melting… you cursed little brat.”
Gerrymandering is terrorism. Republicans are no deferent than Osama Bin Laden.
This will get overturned by SCOTUS. You know they aren’t going to let the Dems have a win when it comes to voting fairness.
This is the way. Fixing gerrymandered state and county maps will go a long way in making free and fair elections. It will do no good if you don’t vote. Watch for any elections near you and vote.
