  1. She’s Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter? Holy nepotism lmao

  2. >“I just see all these men getting hundreds of millions of dollars and then I’m fighting for a tiny fraction of that,” Coppola told the outlet. “I think it’s just left over from the way the culture of that business is.”

She is referring to the overall movie budget not just the director’s pay. That’s just wrong…

  3. Just one thing she realizes that she’s an Indy film Director, right? They don’t really tend to make a whole lot of money. She’s not out there directing I don’t know The Godfather.

  4. Didn’t she just say a few days ago that she would never direct a big budget studio film because it would restrict her creative freedom? Now this? Look, gender disparity is a big problem, but she’s making the choice to direct small indie movies. I’m sure studios would be more than happy to give her a big budget if that’s what she wanted to do. But she doesn’t.

  5. Somehow I’m thinking nepotism in the business could be a bigger problem…

  6. She just said she doesn’t want to do big budget movies.

So don’t complain about getting a small budget to work with then. If you want the big directors bucks, start making films which make good money. I appreciate some of her films, they’re great, but I don’t think I saw any of them in the cinema either.

  7. Let’s not use modern buzzwords. She is an idiot. She is attempting to plan into modern popular narratives to build further support for her financial success while staying exactly where she is in her career. This is a simple career move plain and simple because the facts of her complaint do not bear the conclusion she is alluding to.

  8. Two decent movies made does not equate to big money. Especially when she’s doing low budget films.

  9. I’ll probably get downvoted to oblivion, but I have to say, she is complaining about making tens millions off movies while her peers are probably 5x more. I really don’t care because she’s making millions at the end of the day. Want to talk about not fair? How about the crew that works on her movies that get paid peanuts compared to her. Not saying she isn’t talented, she is. Not saying the indistry is fair, it isn’t. But I just have a hard time empathizing with millionaires who complain about not making MORE compared to regular people.

  10. Someone who shoots themselves in the foot complains for shooting themselves in the foot..

Bitch you make more than me I have no sympathy for you, especially if you didn’t want to do any big budget films like the male directors you are complaining about.

Wants to big money without wanting to do the big work, fuck outta here.

  11. Now imagine the people who weren’t born into Hollywood royalty that are fighting for a tiny fraction of what you have.

  12. She has made eight films and has literally every advantage given her last name.

  13. “I don’t want to make big-budget Hollywood films”

“Hey, Hollywood, why are you giving me such a small budget?”

  14. Sophia Coppola is delusional. In the US about 750 movies get released theatrically. Only about 50 get big budgets, and those 50 movies are what drive Hollywood revenue. 95% of movie directors don’t get big budgets.

Horror movies are doing great without big budgets. Her complaint is really about not getting invited to the small club of big budget Hollywood movies. It’s a small club and few people are invited.

Sophia Coppola needs to make the kinds of movies that people want to see.

  15. Criticizing her for nepotism really isn’t fair. It’s not her fault she born into a wealthy family. There is a shit ton of people born into wealthy families who don’t do shit.

  16. Meanwhile struggling filmmakers of all genders would kill for just a fraction of the opportunities that nepo babies like her receive

  17. Darren Aronofsky gets similar budgets to hers. The Whale was $3 milion. The Wrestler was $6 million. Black Swan was $13 million. Require for a Dream was $4.5 million. Mother! Was $30 million. The Fountain was $35 million.

The only one of his that had a huge budget was Noah, which is his only major studio film.

Indy films don’t get big budgets.

  18. Lots of people in the comments seem really mad at someone who just wants more more lmfao. Don’t we all? Why y’all offended?

  19. I’m going to guess that Coppola’s statement has more nuance than what HuffPo provides or Reddit commenters can handle.

I think it is more two layers. Hollywood has focused on mega budget movies because it is easier to sell a few spectacles to China than try to earn millions from a lot of small films. (Until recently at least. This was the year of the mega bombs).

She (and others) have to fight to get a studio to even get green-light small movies.

The second layer is about the ratio of male to female directors and probably a discrepancy on how funding is uneven at all levels. Like will a male indie director get more budget on average than a female indie director?

    (I don’t know.).

There may also just be some political reasoning for her complaints. Disney has received a lot of free publicity by amping up the backlash of trolls for each of their movies. “Actor gets angry tweets for gender/race swapped role”.

Trolls go for society’s hot buttons because that gets a reaction. It’s not a good gauge for how mainstream America thinks but studios like Disney will still use it to generate controversy/sympathy promotion.

Think that’s cynical? Welcome to Hollywood, baby.

  20. I think there’s a really issue to be said for how women are treated all over Hollywood in nearly every position HOWEVER I don’t think the person related to the guy who did godfather, the guy who won an Oscar for leaving Las Vegas, the guy from Rushmore should be saying jt

  21. She doesn’t make movies very often and as far as I know every one of them have been relatively low budget indie movies. She’s not making big money by choice. Her material isn’t for everyone and she doesn’t really do major release films. I doubt I’ll find a place showing her new movie anywhere near me and I don’t live in the middle of nowhere. Her movies appeal more to cinephiles than the average movie watcher. Once again that’s the style of material she writes. The only two movies I can think of that were written for a general audience were Bling ring and Marie Antoinette.

  22. I’m so tired of this Hollywood lie. All these poor underpaid women have agents who negotiate their pay rate. Same as the men. So instead of blaming misogyny, maybe blame your agent, or instruct your agent as to your desired rate of pay.

  23. I see that most people commenting are not reading the article. Let me help unconfuse you all. This has nothing to do with blockbuster movies.

    A. There is an allotted budget for any type of film.

    B. That budget determines the freedom to make better decisions.

People who do the kinds of films that she does get a budget, right? She is getting a tiny fraction compared to the men for the same genre of movies.

There. I fixed it. Now, do you understand?

  24. If you don’t want to appeal to a wide audience in your work then why complain about not earning as much?

What is more of an advantage, being male or being jumpstarted by your Oscar-winning director/father?
