I am really surprised that this needs pointing out.
Yes, it’s fine for arranging a meeting with family and friends but running a government where hostile actors would really love to read communications?
It’s amazing how the covid inquiry has revealed how important messages in government at key times conveniently had a tendency to disappear into the ether!
It was probably why it was so popular amongst Tory ministers!
Headline unclear, attempted to overthrow the government on WhatsApp
Yup – I was surprised to find out they were all WhatsApping one another rather than having meetings
Any regulated industry this goes without saying. Not when you’re running the country though. Not an issue.
All phones required to be on mdm solution and all message systems pushed by mdm are a server based regularly backed up thing, only approved apps can be installed.
You know, like most companies.
Should stop this crap.
If I heard that nobody at GCHQ has proposed an in-house, secure, audited clone of WhatsApp, then I’d be surprised and a little disappointed. On the other hand, I’d be _far_ from surprised to learn that such an idea got shot down because WhatsApp allows one to destroy evidence and is familiar to politicians…
It is mind boggling to me that this needs pointing out to the leaders of a G7 country. If there weren’t so many other examples of their hopeless incompetence i’d think it was a clever ploy to trick our enemies.
The gov should have their own app that every government member has to use when texting about office gov business (not to do so would carry a jail sentence)
The app auto backs up a gov controlled server so anyone can go and see what was said
I’m genuinely not being hyperbolic when I say this and trial by social media are things that need to, somehow, be curtailed if we’re to avoid serious societal breakdown.
Any business with a remotely serious security policy mandates this and has done forever. That government apparently decided this didn’t apply to them takes the piss.
No shit.
As Omand says, this may have been acceptable during lockdowns due to lack of face-to-face time, but even that’s dubious. People could’ve picked up the phone for an actual conversation, or Teams/Zoom, or written a reasonably-thought out email. WhatsApp is a chat platform; decisions on such matters shouldn’t be made from gossip chat.
