Rich people are more likely to steal from self-checkout. Why?

  1. >”I want to admit that I don’t know what the truth is, but I’ll give you a few theories because I have thought about it.”

Not enough research to draw a conclusion on this, more of a clickbait article than anything.

  2. From the article

“A survey shows who’s most likely to admit to stealing at self-checkout: those with income over $100,000.”

Not that there is a perfect methodology, but asking for people to self admit to theft sounds like a pretty poor methodology and it would make sense if wealthier people are overepresented because they have less incentive to lie.

A better methodology would likely be to look at markets located in rich neighborhoods and poorer neighborhoods and to then look at shoplifting rates reported from the stores. Again, not perfect because wealthier people may occasionally shop in poorer neighborhoods and vice versa, but this negates false negatives in self reporting.

  3. The article title is misleading. Intentionally can mean accidentally forget to scan an item. Would also argue that people with 6 figures can be more honest of these small things.

I have always intended to pay for the goods I buy. However, I’m not wasting 30 mins for a one employee store to fix a broken CVS self checkout over less than 10 dollars.

The guy before me bought one bottle of coke and left with a visible receipt. I proceed to scan my 6 packs of coke. The checkout machine somehow shows one bottle of coke. Without thinking too much, “I paid”. I stood there with a long line patiently waiting realizing my mistake after the fact. Called the employee multiple times, no where to be found. Then I just left with a 6 pack for the price of one.

If your self checkout is as good as lucky, Safeway, hmart, Costco. Any issue would be resolved immediately.

  4. If this is true, there are a few likely candidates for this behavior:

    1. many rich people are frugal, especially as they get older. Some people got rich by being hyper-controlling over income versus expenses
    2. Many rich people don’t act rich. You can’t tell how rich someone is by looking at them; their clothes isn’t a balance sheet, it’s an indicator of their spending. Rich can mean very frugal
    3. I’m wealth on paper, and many people like mean are worried it won’t last forever or about losing self control. I watch prices at the grocery, I’m concerned about inflation, I choose not to buy things I don’t really want/need. I don’t steal, but if you have this mentality, I understand why it can happen.
    4. some rich people cheat on their taxes. Taxes should be low, but not paying your taxes is basically stealing.

  5. Because some rich people believe they are above others in society and simply by the fallacy of their own self image, must act according to it or everything becomes too scary and painful to look at. And the stuff others said, so, several factors, and several different people, but definitely types of personalities prone to my example.

  6. They’ve been robbing from the poor for years…
