In English, work days usually mean Monday to Friday, excluding holidays, but in German, each translation has a different meaning.

This is important, because most parking spaces are restricted by “Werktage”, and those restrictions also apply on Saturdays. I’m glad I Googled it before parking there!

EDIT: But in the case of apartment leases, Werktage are legally defined as Monday to Friday.

  1. Arbeitstage can be any days you have to work. I often work on Sundays or holidays, and these are “my” Arbeitstage. Thus, the term is meaningless for rules or laws that affect everyone.

  2. I’m German and still always confused whenever a place mentions Werktage tbh. Never knew there was a difference to Arbeitstage. Thanks for the info!
