The Sixth Extinction and On Fire are both solid reads. It’s surprising not to see some of Vaclav Smil’s works or works that cover the history that led us here like Gretchen Bakker’s The Grid for an overall view, or John A. Riggs High Tension for a detailed view of how the whole thing started (which hardly differs from how business is done today, usually the only difference being that we are worse off now), or even Katherine Blunt’s recent California Burning just to view the historical context around a single entity. Ed Conway’s Material World also details the 6 critical raw materials that make modern civilization function.
