I recently heard a story about a Christian historian who had to stand in as a Sunday school teacher one day when the regular teacher was absent. He gave the same lecture he gives to his freshman classes. Afterwards, a number of those present came up to him in shock regarding what he had lectured about. I guess one of them asked “Does the pastor know about all of this stuff?”
Apparently that same Christian historian eventually abandoned the church and now identifies as agnostic. And, in my experience, those are the true “Christians.” Anyone who identifies as Christian these days is failing to uphold the values of Christianity.

I think many of them understand their religion just fine – but their goal isn’t adherence to the religion, it’s using the religion for social clout and power because most people just accept “I’m a Christian” as a proxy for morality and ethics without actually examining how the person lives their life.

A guy in California figured out that you could scan individual pudding cups and it would count as a purchase. The guy bought thousands of pudding cups just to scan them. He won a lot of prizes and airline mikes from this. He didn’t even like the pudding. He donated it. The pudding was only his means to an end. He didn’t care about it. He wanted the airline miles and prizes.
Christians treat Jesus like the pudding cup. He is their means to the end of power over others. They want the power and control that comes from telling people that God told them that Trump is good and confirms all of their bigotries and bias as well.
There are a lot of religious folks who don’t understand their religion, sadly.
