  1. The Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday evening that it has reached a political agreement with the Austrian and Bulgarian ministries to extend the Schengen area with Romania and Bulgaria with air and sea borders from March 2024. Entry into the Schengen area would be in a phased formula – first with air and sea borders, followed by negotiations during the year for entry into the free movement area and land borders.

“On 23 December 2023, the Ministry of Interior reached a political agreement with the counterpart ministries of Austria and Bulgaria on the extension of the Schengen Area with Romania and Bulgaria and the application of the Schengen acquis communautaire in Romania and Bulgaria at the air and sea borders from March 2024, as well as the discussion in 2024 of its application at the land borders in close connection with the compensatory measures on strengthening border control and the application of the Dublin Agreement.

Accordingly, during 26 and 27 December, discussions took place through diplomatic channels, between interior ministries, foreign ministries, including at the level of diplomatic missions accredited to the EU, on the draft Council decision legally incorporating this political agreement. These discussions will continue tomorrow 28 December 2023.

The materialisation of the political agreement in a decision requires the agreement of all EU Member States, a procedural step which will continue tomorrow 28 December 2023.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs thanks the President of Romania, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the Permanent Mission in Brussels, for their support during the negotiations over the last 5 months.

The Ministry of the Interior also thanks the European Commission and the Spanish Presidency, as well as MAI Austria and MAI Bulgaria for the constructive discussions that led to the political agreement of 23 December for the access of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area.

The Ministry of the Interior will remain fully committed, together with the President of Romania, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to continue diplomatic efforts until the process is materialised in a decision”, informs MAI.

  2. That settles it, I have no other choice but to vote for the most demented politicians on the ballot.

RO doesn’t join Schengen, we’re just getting screwed over once again.

  3. It is air and sea “schengen” with terrestrial borders to be discussed during the next year. As it is it’s literally pointless but with the new migrant deal that was approved in the EU Austria doesn’t have a valid reason to veto Romania and Bulgaria. It’s still shitty that we are held up to different standards, but if Austria still vetos us next year then they have no excuse

  4. Yeah, another humiliation from our “friends”. One too many for me, going to vote accordingly. Sick of feeling like a second class citizen.

  5. Polish friends, can you hear us. We’re allies yes? You’re in Schengen, yes? Please veto this. Like, you’d do us a favour preventing us from having this. I don’t want to but I am agreeing with the right wing populists on this, this is both worthless and an insult.

  6. Romania is not entering Schengen, we’ll still be separated from the rest of Europe with hard borders, there is no economic benefit.

The only thing that changes is that we skip customs checks in airports, so nothing really.

This is unfair and will fuel anti EU sentiment in Romania, every other country that entered Schengen did so fully, but not us, the extremists are going to have a field day with this.

  7. this is not schengen, this is worse than what we currently have.

  8. Can any Austrians enlighten us on the real reason this is being held up? Is there something the non Austrian world is missing? I never associated Austria with being that unreasonable

  9. Sorry, but that’s dumb and a mistake. We should’ve pushed for full accession. Everybody will try to spin this as a big triumph, but it’s really just more salt in the wound.

  10. What a farce this is, what a god-damn farce… Well done, E”U”!

  11. The entire idea of the Schengen is to establish open land borders, thereby facilitating trade and boosting the economy.

Austria’s actions are directly causing economic harm on both Romania and Bulgaria. I don’t see any rationale to negotiate with a bully that evidently engages in power plays and shows no genuine interest in cooperation.

  12. Congrats. I don’t even get all the Schengen cockblocking. You can always just close your borders when you want to

  13. I would take this as a win if I were you. All of you are missing an important aspect of this decision. Border controlls are just part of schengen acquis. Once the derogation gets removed, your representatives in the Council will finally get voting rights regarding schengen laws, visa policy etc., and you’ll be able to start issuing schengen visas. Land borders will be removed in time. I wouldn’t worry about it too much now.

  14. I honestly hope we don’t take this and we turn into the biggest cunts ever for Austrian companies. I will vote for whomever taxes the living daylight out of OMV and Raiffeisen, as pro EU as I am.
For all I care they can keep Schengen and drill for their own gas.

  15. Welcome home!

Edit: Wait, what? Schengen or not or halfbaked? I am confused…

  16. That’s not schengen, that’s bullshit, there is nothing to be happy or joyful about.
People pass anyway, the problem lies in terrestrial border where most of the economic activity takes place.

  17. lots of great news with schengen and nato recently!

  18. The funniest question is: would now Romanians be allowed into the US since US isn’t requiring a visa for Schengen? It is air after all.

  19. Not even second class Citizen. This is third class…
    I feel humiliated .

  20. It’s a clickbait title, we won’t actually join the “real” Schengen

  21. Hope Romania will at some point get a handle on the rampant corruption destroying their society
