>John Sheahan offered to accompany Ed Sheeran on the fiddle if he records a proper version of the song.
Actually a really good article and in depth critique
He murdered elton john too by the looks of the going ons in that xmas video.
‘murdered’ is good, right?
Your woman was absolutely painful.
Whatever about his opinion on how good or bad it was, saying certain things have to be left alone or treating them as so sacred that they can’t be remixed a bit when covered is stupid. Some of the best covers of all time are ones where the artist reinterprets the song in their own style.
Well at least he fucking played it, and to a big audience. More than others have done.
I hadn’t heard this on NYE , just seen all the fuss about it. Looked at it just now expecting the worst.
What the hell is the fuss about? It’s a cover. It’s not amazing but it’s not appaling. You’d swear he did a version of the song by torturing cats
John Sheahan should probably have a listen to All Along the Watchtower
This post prompted me to listen to Sinead’s version—chills every time!
That needed to be said
He murders music on the daily. Man is a menace to the artform
Ed Sheeran makes a bad job of it all right, and the Hootenanny version was worse. Having said that, I’ve seen and heard it murdered in many a pub. The best man to sing it is Luke Kelly, he has the gravelly voice necessary for that song.
Ed murdered Galway Girl.
The part where they’re humming was awful
He is right
Joy Crookes was singing along on the performance as well, Joolz was on piano with them
I dislike the Ginger Twat as much as anyone, but it’s not purely down to him.
Ed, a bit like Garth Brooks, has a wild idea that he’s Irish. Im by no means saying that you need to be Irish to enjoy Irish music or make your own version of it. But dont change it. Look at metallica, they took Witj and just destroyed it.
I didn’t mind Ed’s part tbh, he has shown his love and appreciation for Irish culture and songs. He did a cover of parting glass and it’s actually really good. However the woman, joy Crookes, absolutely butchered it beyond belief.
I haven’t heard it. And to be honest, I don’t want to. I like Ed Sheeran, but I love Luke Kelly and his Raglan Road. Some songs just don’t need to be remade, they are perfect as they are, sang with the feeling of their time. Luke Kelly was asked to put song to the words of Raglan Road by Paddy Kavanagh himself, because he knew that Luke Kelly was the only one who could convey it’s feeling and message through song.
Please. Say it ain’t so. Was there a rap section?
It wasn’t very good but fair play to him for playing it on the show. He could have played it very safe and played one of his popular songs
The Villagers guy did a amazing version of it. I know it’s heresy but I think it’s better than Luke Kelly’s. The gentle delivery suits the poetry better, in my opinion.

Did Ed rap it?
