Ukraine draft law proposes lowering mobilisation age to 25 from 27 • FRANCE 24 English

It’s a sensitive subject in a war weary Nation after nearly two years of fighting with Russia with no end in sight the Ukrainian government wants to make changes to its draft program in a bid to replenish the ranks the main one is lowering the country’s conscription

Age from 27 to 25 the proposal put forward in a draft Bill published late on Monday has already sparked controversy prompting Ukraine’s publicity shy Army Chief to make a rare public address right now I not satisfied with the work of the draft offices to be frank if I

Were satisfied with their work we would not be discussing this bill right now Ukraine’s defense minister said last week that men of conscription age living abroad will be invited to report for military service while earlier this month President Vladimir zelinski revealed that the Army wants to mobilize up to 500,000 extra people

A request that has divided ukrainians as someone who is currently serving I can certainly say that we don’t have enough people in the Army I don’t think mobilizing more people will be enough we need the support of the West the United States our soldiers alone are not enough when Russia launched its invasion

In February 2021 Kei prevented men aged between 18 and 60 from leaving the country and began several waves of mobilization while hundreds of thousands of ordinary ukrainians volunteered to fight but that explosion of patriotism has since dampened tens of thousands of men are believed to have fled Ukraine illegally others have dodged

Conscription by falsifying medical certificates or bribing draft officials absentees that are making it harder for Ukraine to find the Manpower needed to sustain a war against the country with a population three times bigger than its own

Text of a draft law posted on the website of Ukraine’s parliament late on Monday (December 25) proposed lowering the age of those who can be mobilized for combat duty to 25 from 27.

  1. Why should the Ukrainians be expected to fight a losing battle? The war should never have been started to begin with. The west was just hoping that they could somehow out muscle the Russians by imposing economic pain and leaving them unable to manufacture weapons so that the Ukrainians could with the help of western weapons deal a defeat to the Russians. How they were so wrong. Now they want Ukraine to defend with their bare hands. Western money and weapons have both dried up.
Of course Ukrainians are not stupid. They should simply have the courage to say this was a mistake, let’s talk to the Russians or they will be defeated anyways. Right now they are so indebted to the west to the point that they can’t support themselves for a cent. No pensions nothing

  2. Please let’s stop this madness. It’s time to go to the negotiations table. Better to protect your citizens than to send them to a guaranteed front line

  3. both 27 and 25 sounds quite high? in most countrys you do your basic military training at 18-20. i mean by the time youre 27 you have probably started a family.

  4. Did someone ask them if they want to fight? Or did the Americans already made that decision for them? I'm being sarcastic of course. This men are used as pawns. They are dying for rich men to make more money when they could've negociated peace with Russia a long time ago. The narrative that Russia doesn't want negociations is false.

  5. I hate to come out with this but the idea of finding a peaceful solution and finding a way to end the war, is Ukraine’s best option. Putin is going to wear the Ukraine’s military out eventually, so, perhaps now is the time to review how to end the war. Being stubborn and stupid is not a winning combination. 😉

  6. Citizens have some obligations, among them is to defend their nation in an emergency. The larger question is whether a citizen who will not fight when his/her nation is invaded deserves that citizenship. The drafting of 25-year-olds is not serious. In the U.S., it was always 18. During WW2, a lot of males lied about their age in order to join up. If Ukrainians are not willing to fight for their nation, why should the West support it? Especially when we hear of the rampant fraud going on at local levels. The military service obligation is a long-established practice historically in modern nations and one of the reasons for having a nation. Ideally, such conscription should not be necessary. Carroll Quikqley, the American Military Historian who wrote the tome, "Tragedy and Hope – A History of the 20th Century in Our Time" was dismayed when the U.S. went to an all-volunteer military. He noted that it ended the "Citizen Soldier" tradition that was key to national unity. His concern seems to have been borne out by history. The U.S. military became a welfare state in uniform which has become so "Woke" (concerned with the Leftist "Social Justice" philosophy that the traditional group that made up the elite fighting forces, white males, no longer sign up. U.S. national unity is also a thing of the past. When the "Boomer" generation passes, it might be correct to say that there is no longer any such thing as an "American People." IMO, national service should be mandatory for everyone as part of a citizen's obligation.
