More than 50 French performers, writers and producers published an essay Tuesday defending film star and national icon Gerard Depardieu amid growing scrutiny of his behavior toward women during his five-decade career. Advocates for sexual abuse victims expressed dismay at the outpouring of support. Depardieu was handed preliminary rape and sexual assault charges in 2020 following allegations from actress Charlotte Arnould, and has been accused by more than a dozen other women of harassing, groping or sexually assaulting them. Depardieu denies wrongdoing, and called the essay ‘’beautiful.’’ French President Emmanuel Macron also drew ire when he said last week that Depardieu ’’makes France proud.″

  1. I believe in innocent until proven guilty, but defending him without the process coming to an end is just the arrogance of ‘the untouchable should remain untouchable’

  2. what are those supporters thinking because he was nice to them doesn't mean he didn't assault the others

  3. I’m french and I can’t understand how and why he gets away with so much…Macron doesn’t speak for everybody in France, and to me Depardieu is an absolute embarrassment.
Clearly some of these cinema people take themselves way too seriously and don’t care that much about other people, namely women who had a bad encounter with him.
Like some people in this thread pointed out, being friendly to some doesn’t mean he didn’t cross a line with others.
He’s not being persecuted because of hyper sexualized and idiotic comments, but because several women have come forward with their stories. His comments are just evidence of how casual and obnoxious he is about sexuality.

Legally, he’s strictly speaking “innocent” until a court decides to rule he’s guilty but his actor friends don’t even seem to accept that he should be brought to Justice.

  4. The letter says “Gérard Depardieu is probably the greatest of all actors.” I’m not sure if he’s even the greatest actor called Gerard.
