So Mark Drakeford dodges his question, tries to blame Westminster, and essentially tries to justify his actions by saying “we are copying everyone else”.

Does anyone have any evidence that the restrictions currently in place in Wales are actually helping?
Not a Tory and never will be, full disclaimer.
At least he’s actually not wanting to prolong restrictions, and at least they have the sentiment in government that we have to eventually learn to live with covid. No restrictions in England and everything seems to be going well there.
If only Drakeford wasn’t as cautious as he is because he’s got no leg to stand on here. Overly cautious at the start despite us having the best vaccine rollout, overly cautious with Omicron despite it being milder than Delta…
Maybe for once take a page out of England’s book. Drakeford wants us to wear masks for 100 years from now it feels like.
This is honestly why I think it’d have been better if, on this exceptional crisis, we had the actual UK government’s health policy on all parts of the UK, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, despite devolution.
Most people are double if not triple jabbed by now, and still people want restrictions. Sigh
Even Sturgeons restrictions are going to end as originally planned. This man is and always has been a nutter.
This is what happens when you end up overpromoting someone with the talent and temperament of a district councillor.
I would love to know how much his personal wealth has gone up since the pandemic started..not that cock and bull politicians declare..if there was a way of knowing how much he sold his sole for and when, it would be brilliant.
It might have made sense to be more cautious back in mid-December, before we had the lower severity of Omicron confirmed – though with its higher spreadability, you’d have needed to go full lockdown to achieve much. (I didn’t think so, but it was a reasonable position to hold.)
But since that was confirmed in the Christmas-New Year week it really doesn’t. If there’s anyone not listening to the science now it’s the people who still think the extra restrictions “because we don’t yet know that Omicron is less severe” need to be in place.
I’d like to see what science advises rule of 6, banning crowds in sports events, closing nightclubs etc as effective measures for controlling covid.
Remind me again of Wales’ infection rate vs England’s?
Johnson has been ignoring the science, however would also suggest extreme measures, like a lockdown, are not necessary. Masks, vaccines and isolation of positive/suspected positive cases will do a lot to reduce the spread, provided everyone follows those measures. The biggest problem we have is that not everyone has done so, enough to the point that COVID is still prevalent. We have also handled international travel poorly. There are many factors that have contributed to us being hit harder by COVID compared to similar countries, not locking down for omicron is much lower down on the list than Drakeford imagines though.
I, in counter, accuse Mark Drakeford of ignoring the science.
I think you will find Mark that it is welsh labour that have dropped the ball here by being too reactionary.
I feel so sorry for the Welsh having to live under this twat. (and that’s saying something)
Boris rolled the dice in December and got lucky. Drakeford didn’t and he is looking a bit stupid and needs to shift the focus from himself to elsewhere.
Mark Drakeford told the people of Wales he was deliberately slowing down the vaccine rollout because it didn’t make sense to have vaccinators standing around with nothing to do once all of the available vaccines had been used.
Mark Drakeford forced shops to block off aisles selling “non essential items” (without telling them what is and isn’t essential).
Mark Drakeford told the people of Wales the science said Omicron was as dangerous as Delta.
I could go on. He hasn’t followed the science. He’s made things up as he’s gone along and his advisors have had to clean up every mess / stupid quote he’s given.
If only the rest of the UK could see and hear what he’s done. He makes Boris look credible.

Here’s the science:

You can see how accurate that turned out to be.
