Do you have a hard time finding work in Luxembourg even with a degree?

  1. In the case discussed in the article, not speaking French will disqualify you for the majority of jobs in Luxembourg. Yes finance and consulting are exceptions, but this is the case for the Luxembourg economy in general.

  2. Non EU people without the languages not finding a job? How is this a surprise? As a Luxembourger I also can’t just go to Japan or China and find a job there tomorrow.

  3. Yes, science PhD here, extensive work experience and publications, but long-term unemployed in Luxembourg (came here for spouse’s job). Not part of the statistics, which to my knowledge only account for people officially registered as unemployed. Not possible to become self-employed either, since we rent and are not allowed to use our home address to register.

  4. Yes. Am working as receptionist although I have a degree. It’s just I could never find work in my field after uni as I do not have 20 years experience. And I do speak the country languages.

Also, I know other people in the same case, working as cashiers or cleaning people despite having degrees.

  5. In a recession we tend to revert back to an ugly truth, that is that the amount of diplomas doesn’t matter much if those diplomas are simply not appropriate to the job / sector / economy. Budgets are getting cut and cost of labour is expensive here so it’s also not really the time to experiment with inexperienced people.

Over the past decades, the number of diplomas or certifications has exploded and it has become a business in itself, which undoubtedly reduces the value of most of them and makes it impossible to navigate the spectrum.

Add to that that Luxembourg’s economy is concentrated in finance, real estate and public services, none of which is doing greatly, and it is understandable that people with diplomas outside those sectors struggle to find work.

  6. *the “you” is not meant for you specific and it’s all my personal opinion

Just learn the languages as you would in any other country, don’t study useless stuff like genderstudies, art (only valid if you are extremely talented),human rights,… and know how to present yourself then you will get something 100%.
The only companys that are doing interviews are obviously the ones that are looking for someone, you just got to be the “best” out of the candidates. If there is no demand for your occupation here then you where already to uninformed in the first place. Every company wants the “best” workers, the only question is if you are one of them or not.

  7. Many people commented on not knowing French will hinder opportunities. In engineering not knowing German does the same in Lux. Languages are very important here.
