Him & Townsend are doing some hard work
After how average he was at Villa (apart from a few games) I’m pleased for the lad.
But has he been better than Phillips?
Not till Gareth is in charge. That mf is calling Sancho, Phillips and Henderson before him
Barkley could send Luton on a huge winning run and Southgate would still choose Phillips and Henderson ahead of him.
lol southgate doesn’t care about form
God i hope not.
And he thinks Southgate will give him that chance. Ross Barkley could score 40 in one season and Southgate would still choose Henderson over him.
You can say a lot about Barkley but he has always seemed to be more driven by playing first team football than taking cash. So many English lads just sit on the bench at big teams taking the money instead of getting game time somewhere else.
Dewsbury-Hall is a player that seriously deserves a cap, but we all know Gareth doesn’t give a shit about form
I was so impressed with Ross Barkley when we played Luton. Honestly he dominated the midfield that game he really deserves to be playing for England
No.
Don’t think hes good enough. Then again neither are henderson or phillips
No chance of him getting in the England squad. He definitely deserves it but Southgate picks his mates or the yes men.
He’s a good player but the England NT is so stacked these days I don’t think he gets in.
JWP next in line mate.
Luton have to be favourites v Chelsea, Barkley’s form and he’s playing his former club, + Luton’s home form v Chelsea’s away form.
Happy for the guy, wish it worked out with us, but glad he is finding form again
Southgate’s head is too far up his own arse, he won’t pick them. Man is a joke.
One of the biggest surprises of the season for me. Can’t overstate how bad he was at Villa, aside from 3 or 4 games where his individual attacking skill came into play. He was especially bad when given any defensive responsibility. He didn’t seem to be able to run or tackle.
I’m happy for him that he’s managed to turn it around. Not sure that will be enough for an England recall but you never know.
Errr no
There is absolutely no chance Barkley ends up in the England squad again.
England don’t select in form players that are not a part of the Old Boys club.
I remember when Tom Huddlestone was lighting things up for Hull before the 2014 WC and people were saying he should be picked for the England squad and nothing happened.
I don’t think he’s in with a shout for England – as Luton aren’t in Europe etc. but it’s a good signal of strength of the premier league that there are English players in sensational form who aren’t even in the wildest dreams of the England manager.
Quite often in the past you’d just see pretty much the only English players available in some positions getting called up as the strength in depth wasn’t there.
There was also room at one point for ‘pity’ caps for the likes of Kevin Davies, Ricky Lambert, and Leon Osman as they came to the end of their career just because they were seen as decent English pros and it was a nice thing to do. Mark Noble would’ve got one more recently if this was still a possibility.
Obviously he’s been injured a lot but players like Harvey Barnes never got a look in for England despite fitting the young/talented profile, to the extent I believe he is (or has?) considered switching to play for Scotland?
Tl;dr – despite Southgate’s chosen men being selected come hell or high water I also think the standard has risen so high (Bellingham, Kane, etc.) that it’s not enough just to be playing at a good level.
