The Los Angeles sheriff’s department (LASD) released body-camera footage on Friday of an officer fatally shooting Niani Finlayson, 27, who had called 911 for help during a domestic violence incident.

The footage from the 4 December encounter showed that deputy Ty Shelton shot Finlayson four times within roughly three seconds of entering her home.

The killing in Lancaster, a city in north LA county, sparked national outrage last week, with civil rights activists questioning why deputies failed to de-escalate the conflict and instead used fatal force against a woman who had sought their assistance and was a victim of abuse.

In a statement Friday, LASD said the deputy, whom the department previously identified as Shelton, had been removed from the field as an investigation continued, in line with standard policy

  1. Welcome to the US: “We are seriously considering arming our teachers.” 👩‍🏫
Welcome to the UK: “We don’t even arm most of our police!” 👮‍♀️

  2. When you're a cop and consistently see people behaving in such a uncivilized way it eventually makes you uncivilized. Just loud, aggressive, verbally incoherent people and their never ending personal dramas….it's soul crushing sensory bombardment when you are exposed to it over and over, it eventually even dehumanizes you.

  3. Tasers, not firearms. Don't shoot someone dead if they've "shoplifted a Pepperoni". And why 4 shots fired. She's dead over and over – and for what.

  4. US Police or IDF? Not much difference, same training, same contempt for the people they are supposed to deal with.

  5. Domestic violence call. Woman refuses to open the door, woman says she’s gonna stab her bf for pushing her daughter, ignores cops commands to put the knife down, goes to her bf and holds the knife like she’s going to stab him. If she had carried out her threats (which could have happened in an instant), you would have accused the cops of not protecting the bf.

  6. why do they not use tasers in this kind of situation or rubber bullets? likewise, why did he need to fire multiple shots?
