UN chief condemns latest attacks on Ukraine which leave 30+ dead | DW News

Well the UN Secretary General Antonio gues has condemned Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine at least 30 people were killed and many more injured Ukraine’s government shares more than 150 missiles and drones struck cities Nationwide damaging vital infrastructure as well as industrial and Military facilities schools and a maternity hospital were among the buildings

Hit a Maternity Ward blown apart in Ukraine’s eastern city of nepro mothers and labor were rushed down to the basement for shelter the kremlin’s massive aerial assault overwhelmed ke’s air defenses Ukraine’s President says Russia hit them with almost everything in its Arsenal residential buildings and a shopping center were also hit in the

Waves of attacks which began overnight and lasted for hours in ke there were multiple deaths firefighters battled a huge Blaze at this Warehouse the attacks serve as a stark reminder for those living far from the front lines I was shocked because we got used to things becoming calmer not Intensifying today was a terrible day it somehow reminds me of the first day of the fullscale invasion because I didn’t expect it because in keev it was more or less safe ukrainians face yet another winter with critical infrastructure under threat keev has long been pleading to Western allies for more air defense

Missiles these attacks are now ramping up the pressure on them to deliver Sonia funa is in Ukraine Forest she’s in the capital keev good to see you Sonia it’s now around 24 hours since this massive Nationwide Air Assault what happened overnight well it was much a calmer

Night I have to say there were no air raid alerts uh at least in ke um uh though we did hear reports of the city of hon coming under renewed Russian fire overnight there were air alerts in in that region though of course uh hon is a

Frontline City and faces near daily Uh Russian shelling of course today we’re also hearing of cleanup operations continuing in in cities across Ukraine there have been casualties as your report mentioned not just in Kev but in cities like uh nepro and zapara and K but also in uh cities like laiv which

Are you know which is in the west and which is much further away from the front line and which is usually spared the worst of this Invasion now we’re also hearing reports in the Ukrainian media that the Russian defense Ministry is now claiming that it shot down 32

Ukrainian drones overnight over the K and Moscow regions now these are unconfirmed reports we haven’t heard anything from the Ukrainian side as yet so it’s hard to say whether this is you know retaliation for for yesterday’s assault Russia hit practically every corner of Ukraine in that air assault

You talk about how have the people in keev responded so I was in keev yesterday I visited a couple of the blast sites and and spoke to some residents and they’re of course rattled but we have to remember that many residents here you know go about their lives during Aid alerts and that

Is because the city of keev has become much safer than you know when Russia invaded or even you know compared to uh to last winter and that is simply because it has vastly improved uh air defenses and in recent months it’s mainly you know falling debris uh from

Rockets and drones shot down by Ukrainian air defenses that has caused destruction here and and some loss of life but residents told me that changed yesterday because yesterday we actually saw Russian missiles evading the Ukrainian uh air defenses and really slamming into buildings here factories and warehouses uh taking direct hits

Causing a massive destruction uh and loss of life and I think that has really shocked people uh in this city and created a sense of you know real vulnerability and Russia says it has shot down Ukrainian rockets and drones following its massive aerial ass assault on Ukraine now Russia’s defense Ministry

Said 13 Rockets had been destroyed over the southern uh belgar region now according to the local Governor several people were killed including at least two children Russian officials said more than 30 drones were shot down by air defenses let’s speak to Marina Moran postdoctoral researcher in the war studies department at Kings College

London welcome back Marina good to see you again according to the Russian Ministry of Defense 32 drones a shot down over Russian regions overnight do you think this was revenge for the heavy air strikes uh we saw a day earlier good day well I I think it is

Very plausible to believe that Ukraine had to formulate some sort of response in this short window of opportunity but generally speaking we have seen attacks from Ukrainian territory on belr we have seen some attacks on Moscow most notably in May during the May celebrations so I

I think it’s a mixture of both we have to remember that this is a war it’s not a quit procur one side is not waiting until another one attacks in order to conduct some operations however I think for Ukraine this is important to do it right now to demonstrate its resilience

And to demonstrate that it still has the capability to respond per perhaps not in kind however it has to um do something to demonstrate the will of Ukrainian people to resist the Russian aggression um in the international Arena where the support for Ukraine is waning now looking at Russia’s uh strikes on

Ukraine I mean Russia hit practically every corner of Ukraine in Friday’s ER attacks that officials are describing as as the biggest since the start of this war did the scale of the attacks there come as a surprise at this point in the war well perhaps because we haven’t seen

Many strikes of that scale being conducted and the first one was um when the war has started and so over the years we have heard that Russia is running out of missiles but as a matter of fact Russia is not running out of missiles and Russia has been preparing

For this attack end of November it has tested kev’s air defenses with shahad bones for instance and here we’re seeing that especially after the Ukrainian attack on on Russian war ship in Theodosia it was a sort of a logical response by Russia to Target Ukraine’s military facilities uh drone factories

Ammunition factories everything that they could locate in order to destroy Ukraine’s capability to conduct such strikes in the future and we heard a Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson saying that Russia has launched everything it has including x22 missiles which are extremely hard to intercept what does that tell you about Russia’s strategy

Stry at this point well I think Russia has stepped up its game in terms of the missiles it is using in order to uh evade the Western supplied air defenses such as the Patriot batteries and I think we also have to understand that Russia has red up its capacity to produce missiles um

There have been many reports from Western sources indicating such and indicating the fact that Russia has managed to C vent the sanctions in order to get the necessary parts so we shouldn’t be underestimating Russia and thinking that um it might R out of missiles quite the opposite I think that

We are likely to see more of those sophisticated missiles to be used in Ukraine Marina [ __ ] thank you as always for your analysis that is Marina [ __ ] from Kings College London thank you for having me

  1. well, surely condemnation will cause china and india to stop buying oil and cause putin to give up his murder-hobby.

  2. Yesterday's Russian attack mainly caused damage to military targets. Multiple sources indicate that factories, warehouses, airports, barracks, anti-aircraft guns and a military hospital have been hit. Unfortunately, there are also civilian targets, but that happens in every war. Just ask the people of Afghanistan, Iraq and Gaza.

  3. If NATO forces weren't concealed behind the wolf shield, the Russians would have provided them with an abundance of vegetarian fare.

  4. the un chief shouldnt talk, otherwise he would look like hypocrite.

As a German Citizens , How they feel when their trillions of $ worth future economy blasted by NATO for not sliding towards Russia …now you have to pay 4 times for GAS to America 😜, further America's GAS monopoly project started in 2016 and your government were sliding away all these years safely. Unfortunately Scholz not bright enough or he is compelled to take interest for America's sake. Further Billions contributed to Ukraine where even all around the world knows who blasted the pipeline for what sake.
