Well if there would be less american junk food and to be able to try some proper traditional finnish food, I would have an opinion. Burgers, sausages, dips and crisps, hideous pizzas and asian/indian cuisine are not finnish food, and yet they’re everywhere.
However, karelian pie with egg butter, mustikkapiirakka are on top of my favs. PLEASE make finnish traditional food more accessible
I’d give a 1 too.
cheese 10/10. lihaanpiirakkas 10/10. i prefer to shop at K market, not so much go to restaurants. so theres that. …when people have cookedfor me its good.
Hernekeitto is hands down the worst thing I have put near my mouth. On the other hand, I ate some really spectacular dishes cooked by Finnish hunters. Overall, there are some really good foods if you really know where to find them, but also some really bad ones.
What I have had and cooked from recipes I’ve found, it’s not bad. Karelian hot pot is one of my favourite stews to cook!
I don’t know but how on earth Germany scored so high?
I’m from Poland, visited Finland for some time with my wife, we both loved Karjalanpiirakka, I slapped a lot of Munavoi and it was awesome! I rate it 100 out of 5.
We also had some vegetarian Lihapiirakka, pretty good.
We also have something similar to Joulutorttu in rural parts of Poland, it’s pretty good, can’t go wrong with prune jams.
Karjalanpiirakka 10/10
Karjalanpaisti 9/10
Mämmi 11/10
Lohikeitto, if done well, 9/10
Kaalilaatikko 7/10
Salmiakki 10/10
Overall as a finn, by favourite cuisine after maybe French, Italian and Japanese
If Turkish cuisine is rated 4.49, Finnish cuisine is 0.49. Swedish, Norway are also similar.
I love Finnish cuisine😙 at school meal, i usually eat like nearly two dishes, and of course, it’s super delicious (valio sponsor)
It’s bland basically
It’s not that it tastes bad why it’s not highly rated. It’s because it’s not fancy or complex. Historically nordics had to use what little they could get out of their cold harsh land. Finnish cuisine was made to be useful. It’s for the everyman.
What could be tastier than lohikeitto?
Greek cuisines are overrated
There are some really tasty things in Finnish cuisine but the average food people make and serve is pretty bad in my experience.
I’ve seen some truly weird combinations of foods in lunch restaurants that suggest even the chefs don’t understand ingredients. Things like a “salad” that is just slices of orange and raw onion, or another that is sliced pepper (paprika) strips in cold baked beans.
I’ve lived with lots of Finnish housemates and the most common meal seems to be macaroni, ground beef and ketchup. Some people spice it up with taco seasoning. What a combination!
One of my housemates had a diet entirely of tuna straight from the can and unflavored quark (rahka).
Another common meal is sausage sauce (nakkikastike). There are a lot of weird meat-based foods in general. And everything is served with boiled potatoes.
I personally dislike salty licorice (salmiakki) but it’s hard to find candy without it.
I’ll admit I started liking mämmi after many years, but only with lots of cream and sugar. Definitely one of the weirdest foods I’ve eaten.
Traditional Finnish Christmas food is mostly casseroles (laatikko) which I’ve never liked. They have the texture of baby food.
Most Finnish pizza from pizza-kebab restaurants is utterly tasteless and yet people eat that shit up.
If you want good food here, you either have to make it yourself or pay for a more expensive restaurant.
