Planned provocations? Like setting up the air defense in such a way that when Belgorod is attacked it fires on its own civilians? How do I have to read this quote?
Russian Ministry of Murder (also known as “Ministry of Defense”) officially said that the damage was caused by falling debris after shooting down the projectiles, and alleged that “the damage would’ve been higher otherwise” (to the military objects, lol). Type of munition is unclear, they very well might be lying about cluster munitions.
I doubt we will ever learn the truth, whether these were inaccurate Ukrainian strikes, diverted by EW or Russian air defense missiles that malfunctioned/were used at wrong time and place.
But I feel we need to be consistent. When there are causalities due to falling debris, air defence rockets or other things in Ukraine during Russian air strikes, we rightfully blame Russia. Ukraine also bears responsibility for the civilian deaths in belgorod, personally I choose to believe Ukraine targets military targets and does not intend to kill non-combatants – but this is still the result of these attacks.
It wouldn’t have happened if Russia had never invaded, so in the end the main responsibility lies with Putin, but still… attacking Belgorod is a choice, and I feel like this is getting into very morally complicated territory.
So… it’s Russia’s fault.
Good. The war needs to be brought home e to Russians.
And the west needs to jack up the sanctions. Time to tell Russia’s remaining trade partners you can trade with the west OR with Russia. Not both. Watch how many “friends” Russia actually has.
